choke vavle on motor

which way should the red lever on my motor the choke lever im told is whats its called should be pointed. 85 evinrude 115 v-4 vro

That is called a primer solenoid.It's used for when your electric choke isn't working by using the key.The lever position needs to be in line with the solenoid for normal operation.When the choke(or primer solenoid)isn't working with the key you turn the lever in the other position.

Thanks Joes, I just purchased a 1991 johnson 150 for my procraft and i installed the motor on Thursday. I took it out on Saturady and it woudn't run when i open the throttle up all the way. It would start and idle perfect but WOT it would just sputter. After brining the boat home I took the cover off and noticed that the lever was turned counter clock wise so i turned it back clock wise. Then took it back out last night for a test drive and it ran perfect. starts easy runs perfect. thanks for the reply.
