ok im new to boating and i have never owned a car older then 1995 so can someone please tell me the propler way of starting my outboard?, its a 1967 merc 500 50hp.

I crank it a bit press the choke and throtle it up till it starts, and it does most of the time... (never cranking for more then 30sec.)? is this right? then i idle it for a while in nutral ~1min, pop it into gear and go for a spin, at ~3000 rpm max then once its warm it starts fine without the ?choke? sorry for the dumb question im only 22 what do i know about a 1967 outboard? or that kind of "technology"?

Pump it Up

Pump it Up

Always pump the primer bulb until it is firm before you turn the key. This gets fuel into the lines so you are not using the fuel pump to do so.

Re: choke?

"I crank it a bit press the choke and throtle it up" if that means you crank a while before engaging choke & opening throttle...try throttling up first, & pressing choke from the get go, and don't let off the choke til she starts. if she tries to die before she's warmed up good, give the choke a little bump - should pick her right back up.

30 sec. sounds like a long time - take your airbox cover off and make sure both choke plates are closing all the way when the choke is engaged.

and just in case nobody's told you this yet...running (or cranking) the motor even for a short time without the lower unit submerged, or else with a water hose attachment, will burn up the water pump impeller. Also don't rev it up on the water hose more than needed to keep it running during warm-up.

I never had it running without it being in the water, theres a air box...lol. and thanks for the tip about choking from the get go, now that i got a new throtle cable it should run better.

and i always prime the bulb up, i think i might need a new one, it squarted out a little hole the the other day, maybe it should im not sure.

If it is squirting fuel out somewhere, then you have a fuel leak. You should definitely replace the bulb and fuel lines.

Re: Replace the bulb

go ahead and splurge - spend the extra $7 or so for the genuine BRP primer bulb - aftermarket bulbs like attwood just seem to wear out in a hurry. (not knocking attwood in general just the primer bulbs)
