I have a 1975 Mercury 850 That i just rebuilt. The engine has been idling a little rough and i am only able to get the rpms down to about 1100-1050 and still be able to put the engine into gear. I can get the rpm's down to 550rpms with the engine in gear but it will stall when i go from nutrual and back to gear. I was on the water and playing around with the engine and I pushed the choke button after it was warm and it did not effect the engine that much. I was wondering if that ment a fuel problem or is it not much of a big deal.

Re: Choke ?

when its warm, the choke should pretty near stall it. so i'd figure carb is gummed up some or needss some setting

Re: Choke ?

they only thing i have not replaced in the 2 weeks are the needle valves in carbs and check valves in the fuel pump, maybe i will replace them just to make sure that is not the problem.

Tom, Is the idle spark advance set correctly? It would not be a bad idea to check it, as well as the max spark advance.

Re: Choke ?

I just checked it. I did clams link and sync on the engine about a week ago. The only probem is the sticker wore off where the tdc all the way to 10 degrees. I set tdc with a dial indicator but i had to guess where 5 degrees is at.
