that should do it......I doubt your engine weighs over 4,000 lbs.

That hoist will do fine weight wise as the whole engine package weighs 750-800#, so about 500# for the dressed engine.

Vertical lift height is going to be more of a problem than weight. Will the boom go low/high enough to get the engine out of the boat? I think you will be fine either way as I used this one 2-ton-foldable to install the 140HP in my boat. It worked fine once I raised the front of the trailer up.

Yes the vertical clearance will be the issue. I built a old west-style scaffold out of 12' 4X4 uprights with a double 2X10 cross piece, and appropriate 2X4 braces, to make it stable. It was just tall enough to back the trailer and boat under the cross piece, and use a $20 cable hoist (cumalong) to lift my V6 mercruiser Engine high enough to pull the boat clear.

I'd get a chain engine hoist if I were you, seen too many of those cable come-alongs fail even with little load in them. Many of them are made outta pot metal, hence the $20 deal you got...

just so your aware, i used 4x4's x12' like Chris1956 was talking about. if i remember right the top cross member is 2ea. 2x10's maybe 12's sandwiched together with large through bolts w/ large washers for back plates.

there is a 2x4 in the pic though. on top of the cross beam. it sits outside and had been a few years since i used it so i wanted to be sure the center of the beam wasn't rotted. the 2x4 was my insurance so to speak..

I think Frisco rented one like it to pull the engine out of an even taller SeaRay 220.
I'd take that over a wood frame anyday.

The 4X4 uprights and 2X10 cross piece had no issues with strength. You will need to make sure the thing doesn't fall over. I used 2X4 under the end of the uprights to keep them from sinking into the ground, a triangle of 2X4. on each upright to keep it from falling back and forth and a 2X4 from upright to upright on the ground, to keep them from moving in-out. I also used 2X4 gussets to keep 2X10 upright and 2X4s to brace from 2X10 to 4X4 at a 45* angle. It was very rigid. My new neighbor (turned out to be a jerk, BTW) asked me if I planned to keep the scaffold up permanently. My thoughts were to throw a couple of hangman's nooses over the cross piece and see if that changed his boorish attitude. Afterall it was near Halloween!
