I have a 1997 four winns 205 sundowner with a volvo penta 5.7. I would like to upgrade the prop and have questions. What is the right prop for this boat? I'm not too sure what pitch and size and all that I should get. Also ss or aluminum, which is better? Is the ss worth the extra money? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Choosing the right prop

current prop size, make, alluminum or ss? what is current wide open throttle rpm while on plane? what is current max speed? gear ratio of lower unit? what are you trying to improve? ss props are way better its all obout the money its like michelin tires compared to econo- pro tires. and 4 blades are better than 3 blades in most ways. come back with answers and we'll help you out

Re: Choosing the right prop

I'm not sure of any of these things, I was hoping there was some sort of online specs for this engine. I know I have a aluminum with 3 blades. As far as the rpm and top speed I tried to search online but couldnt find any info and I don't have a manual. Any ideas?

Re: Choosing the right prop

all you have to do is take the boat out and get rpm and speed at wot. then take the prop off and read #'s on it. #'s are usually under prop nut. there is no way off just guessing what should be on this boat. it is more of a trial and error. prop technology is changing every day. if we can get current prop and current wot #'s that is a great start. and we can go from there to see what can improve your paticular performance. there is not 1 prop that will work out for everyone that has that boat. engine condition, weight of cargo, and uses of the boat all can change which paticular prop you need. that motor should be running close to 4400 rpms to achieve maximum engine life. come back with info and we'll be more than glad to get you on the right prop for you.
