i've had this rig for several yars and am really pleased with one exception.

that is the speed potential. i keep hearing and reading about similar rigs - 30' center consoles with twin two hundred hp engines and they claim 50+ top speeds.

on mine, in order for the motors to be up in the proper rpm range i'm using 15" ss props. i cruise at 4000 rpm and 29 mph ant top out at 35 mph. while these numbers are fine for my use, i can't help feel something is missing.

when i run compression tests on the powerheads they are to the high end of the specs so i don't feel i should be down on power (the ring seal would seem to be OK and the reeds are sealing as well). or is there another test i should be running to check on my engine health? or are my numbers "real" and the rest BS?

What motors do you have? What RPM are they capeable of? Are they on a bracket? I think you are correct -- the other numbers seem a little optimistic but I would think you should be doing better.

Have you tried anything like different props or raising the motors? Which side is the counter rotation gearcase on? What toe in are the motors set at?

Has it always run this way since new? Have you weighed the boat? What does your dealer say?

Good luck!

Re: chris craft 313 w 2-200 outboards

the 313 is the bracket model of the chris cc.

bought boat used in FL, came with 22" pitch best was 3800 rpm. motor was mounted one step up from lowest possible mounting position. prop would aereate while accelerating and even running straight and level!

have tried 19; 17 and finally the 15's. rpm came up with each change down in pitch. somewhere between the 19 and the 17" tests i dropped the motor to lowest possible-no more aereation while straight.

no dealer in northern ohio to confer with.

boat is kept in water and bottom painted (several coats and rough) next question would be how to remove and start with fresh bottom?

forgot to mention both motors std rotation - no counter. suzuki's rated 5000-5500 to my knowledge. right now 5500 on port and 5300 on starbord.

Interesting. The slip is between 15 and 17% which is not bad. Could be better but OK for now. It's funny that the boat had 22's on it. That almost leads us to believe at one time they were correct. Most of the 30' types we have been around use props in that range. Do you think the tach is correct?

I would weigh the boat next and compare it to the advertised weight. The bottom paint will slow you down some but shouldn't be that much.

Contact Chris Craft and ask what props they used with Suzuki's. See what they say about speed. Let us know.

Good luck!

what do you mean by toe in? are you saying that the motors should NOT be parallel? i would think nonparallel would add drag as opposed to performing better?

if they are supposed to be non parallel how much should they be?

any suggestions on best way to remove multiple coats of old bottom paint?

On V bottoms we run 1/16" to 3/16" toe in. It helps. Did you call Chris Craft?

Keep us informed. Good luck!

Re: chris craft 313 w 2-200 outboards

spoke to cc today.

they were surprised (customer service) that the performance was so poor! he referred to some data he had. in his data, he had data that indicated twin 200 mercs would pull 24" pitch clevers to 5500 rpm and 55mph and 225 hp would pull 22" round ear to 5500rpm and 57 mph.

can mercs be that much stronger than suzuki's?

Re: chris craft 313 w 2-200 outboards

to dhadley or any one else...

as per previous posts it appears i'm down on performance as much as 40%.

rough bottom paint i'm guessing may account for some of it so what is a good procedure for removing - chemical - mechanical (sanding or pressure washing etc) can this be worth 20 mph?

if bottom paint is not entirely responsible, can the motors be off that much and still have good compression? where should i look in the motors for this kind of lost performance?

toein - to the best of my recollection motors are parallel. dhaley said some toe in would help. any guess how much? and does it help handling or top speed?

thanks in advance for the help.
