I took my recently acquired boat and motor on the lake for a test run. My friend had the oil in his truck so I filled the 6 Gal tank that had one gal of mixed fuel and put in 5 gals of new gas. When I got to the lake I then added the proper amount of oil for a 50:1 mix for the new 5 gals. The engine started and ran fine for about an hour and then started running rough like it was missing and had lost a lot of power. I got back to the ramp and pulled it out of the water. Questions: How improtant is the mixing of the oil and gas ? In other words could I have possibly not had the new gas and oil mixed properly ? This is the second time I have had the engine out on the water and it has always ran strong until yesterday. The tank is an old metal tank that came with the boat. Should it get rid of it and start with a new tank that is made out of plastic as thought I might have picked up some "junk" from the old tank ? Also how much gas would I expexct to use with this engine ? assuming I was running at top speed most of the time ? Appreciate and thoughts suggestions to try before take it to a dealer for service. Thanks in advance.

Assuming the old gas was still good and not stale or crapped up should be no problem.Look in the tank with a flashlight turn it on before putting it near the tank.If the tank seems clean then should be ok.Usually there is a screen in the tank and it could be plugged.Though if plugged the bulb would tend to collapse. If the motor sat for a long time ,several months, the fuel system may be gunked up.As you use it the components tend to get more fouled.
You should have a Service manual before doing any ignition trouble shooting.
Careless testing could damage the system. After market manuals are available here as well as a number of other places and possibly the library.

marine oil usually disperses as soon as it hits the gas. With the vibrations of boating I doubt your problems revolve around the gas being mixed. I would start with rebuilding the fuel pump and maybe replace fuel hoses including the primer bulb. If that dont fix it next work on the carbs. All time best would be to compression and spark test first to verify these are working before dumping money into the motor.
