Hello again, It started and ran great for about 45 minutes. I dropped the wife and littles ones of at the beach area and me and my older boys started tubing when the motor just died. no spit or sputter just dead. I pulled plugs and seemed to be fine but would not start back up. I felt the coil and it was very hot. I have the modified engine. (cdi to standard coil conversion). I know that it worked because i have taken it out three times, this being the third. My question is am i suppose to have 180psi of comppresion? It sounds like alot but not sure and would coil overheating mean replace or another problem? Any ideas would be greatly appriciated.

does it have spark? and 180 is high, like some one rebuilt it heavy, or you have excessive carbon build up. if you have it converted to a car coil, and the coil was realy hot, you probably need a balast resistor, and now a new coil.

i have a ballist resistor and i just checked the compression again and it is 170 on 1 3 and 4. #2 has nothing. what does this mean.

That means the top carb ran lean for whatever reason and the #2 piston is melted. Face it: The cylinder is most likely scored so you are looking at a rebuild and overboring at least the #2 cylinder.

That's the bad news. the good is that it is an easy engine to repair and you can do everything except the overbore. A machine shop will charge 50-60 for the one hole and a piston will cost 70-125.

Thanks for the education. I will tear it down and get it fixed. Meanwhile i have another 105 a tad older that is my spare, i will see if i can get that one running. Thanks for the help.

Every guage reads different.
What your looking for is similarity.
All 4 cylinders reading close.Excessive carbon would result in a low reading(stuck ring).
The very hot coil will result in eventual no fire or weak fire poor performance under load.
Just like in a car.
Change to an internal resistor coil. When you get it running again???measure the voltage to the coil.J

I pulled the head and i have no idea what i am looking at so i took pictures. I know that something went wrong in there because the piston #2 is beat up and the gasket is broke and bent. Can someone tell me what the reasoning for this is. IMAG0257.jpg4-668EEFB2-741457-800.jpgIMAG0254.jpg

You definitely swalled something. Can't really tell from the pictures if a ring has broken. The FOD may be a liberated reed petal - you would have to remove the top carb or better the entire intake manifold to have a look. Either way, something went through, and it doesn't appear to be a chunk of head gasket. Not sure why it split, but the head or block may be warped, but not sure how well these gaskets stand up to 180 psi (if the gauge is correct). How does the cylinder wall look?

As far as i can tell the wall appears to have a few scratches on it. No deep grooves. When i pulled the bolts off the head a few of them were not tight. The weight of the ratchet loosened them. Could that have started a problem. I was told that this was a new head gasket when i bought the boat but it doesnt look to be a gasket that only has a few hours on it. There is also a small peice of the gasket missing which im assuming is what beat up the piston. So could this be fixed by honing and replacing the piston or do i need to have it machined?

Loose head bolts are definitely a contributing factor in the gasket blowing out. Re-torque of the head bolts following a warm-up to operating temp may be a good idea. My guess is that if there is some of the metal crush ring of the gasket missing, it would have been blown out rather than drawn in. The question of how best to repair - that depends how much work you want to do and how much damage has been done. If the damage to the bore is limited to light scratching, you may get away with removing the #2 piston and honing/de-glazing the bore. The piston may be salvageable by dressing the dents, provided that a ring hasn't turned over, or it exhibits other rejectable damage. You won't know how much work is required until you have performed some more teardown and inspection.

Thanks but i think you are a little far away for me to swing through and pick it up. Im in North Carolina. I dont even know how to dial that number. Besides i have already bought another motor. Thanks anyways.

Hey again, i do beleive my motor is still good.:) I have put a new head gasket on it and i had another starter off of my 150 force that was weak but it managed to start the 105. I have to check the compression but i started it and ran the power tune process and then let it run for about 45 minutes in the tub. It seemed fine and ran well till it ran outa gas. Maybe i didnt need another engine after all. I guess i will have two running boats anyone want a 82 Formula F-18 with a 77 105 chrysler? I will sell it cheap.
