i bought an old boat to restore with my teenage son.
it's a fiberglass crestliner v-hull 16'. can't find any markings on the hull. the motor is a 105 MAGNAPOWER and the plate says 105 7H 8H. i've read alot of the threads and have looked in numerous sites but don't see these exact #'s .....any help would be great. i've seen alot of issues with these motors in these threads. are they worth the trouble? motor has not been started in some time. lower unit (inside , under block) is an ugly green color. the rest of the motor is white. is it possible this motor has been rebuilt? most of the electrical parts seem clean and relatively new. motor turns with ease by hand with plugs out, plenty of carb build-up on ends of pistons. all the numbers of the parts are visible (starter, reg, carbs etc...) would this help identifying a rebuild? what to do next would be great?? wires are all cut so i jumped the cellunoid and the starter engages rapidy and all pistons fire with no plugs. plugs in - it's sluggish at best but didn't push it. thanks a million for any input!

I can't make head or tail out of the date codes
I do know that you can damage the magnapower ignition unless you follow the manual while trouble shooting spark. The spark must always be able to discharge. These motors are fair performers but parts can be expensive and difficult to find.
You shouldn't do any work on the motor without a manual.Sometimes you can find one at the library.
Aftermarket manuals are available here at iboats as well.If the motor was mine I would try to get it fixed up and running without spending too much money.
If it can't be done sell it and put the money toward the newest Evinrude or johnson in the 100 hp range you can afford.87 or newer would probably be best but older motors would be ok as long as you check for available routine parts. for carbs and tune ups, pumps etc.
And of course try to find one that is ready to go.
Befrore going too far you should check the boat for rot in the floor and transom. This can usually be repaired but can be a major job.If the floor is weak you will want to check underneath for rot in the stringers.
Check the bottom to be sure it is not distorted from weakness or improper trailering.

Re: chrysler 105 year made?

yea , i already experienced rotted stringers. knew the floor was bad , but not as bad as it turned out to be. my son and i tore up the floor and old stringers already. all the fglass was in great shape so we made new stringers by overlapping marine plywood and making our own stringer stock. we then retraced some of the good peices and with a little "fitting" were able to make 6 new ones. we added some cross bracing and i think the floor will now hold a few elephants. i'm hoping the motor has potential as i've only got $300 in so far and that includes the purchase of the boat , trailer, motor and the new floor (no carpet yet).....i'm open to any suggestions on getting the motor fired up. by the way i finally found out the motor is a 78. which i guess is newer than i thought and also nastalgic since that's when i graduated from hs. lol...........

1057H8H is from 1978. Test compression and spark first and go from there. As steelespike mentioned the plugs or wire tips need to be grounded when turning motor over so spark can discharge. You can get a spark tester from an autoparts store or tie the threads of the plugs to ground with plug wires attached. If all cylinders have a good blue spark and the cold compression numbers are around 120 on each cylinder without more then a 10 percent dieviation in each cylinder chances are you can get it running for relativily cheap. Just some basic pointers

Push key in for choke, Motor must be in neutral to start (neutral interlock switch engages to allow voltage to go to the starter solinoid). Carb kits are 18-7037 and fuel pump kits are 18-7806 NAPA sells both kits. Impeller should be replaced along with the lower unit oil. Carb kits about 15 per carb and fuel pump kit is 10 bucks. Replace all fuel lines and primer bulb. Maybe blast some Marvel Mystery oil in each cylinder and crank it a turn or two so it has a chance to soak in all the cylinder parts. I would not get a syloc manual. Get a Clymer or go to www.chryslercrew.net and buy a downloadable service and parts manual. I would get that and the clymer. Clymer has real good descriptions of outboards that you wont find in a factory manual. Then as a last thing do a search here and read as much as you can. I think it would be awsome way for you to spend time with your kid. Just make sure compression and spark are good. If not dont dump money into this project.

Re: chrysler 105 year made?

hey u guys are awesome! thanks for all the tips. my son will be 15 in dec. and i don't want to lose him during the "angry" teenage years. we have had some quality time together as we both learn how boats are made and how to repair them. our goal was to take a cheap boat and turn it into a weekend fisher . so far so good! now that the floor is safe and while the investment is low i'll keep efforts into seeing what the motor has in store for us! will add future posts. thnx again............
