Boating and forum newb here. I'll be asking numerous questions in the weeks ahead. FYI, I do have a manual - Seloc

It's probably been asked a million times.

What is the year of my motor?

Model # 1158H0D
Serial # 1479

I'll guess and say 79?
Is there a table somewhere identifying what these numbers signify? If there is, I think it should be posted to the relevant brand forum as a FAQ. If there is one already, ignore what I said. :)

Re: Chrysler 115hp Year?

1980 is the year. The model codes changed pretty much yearly with chrysler so basically the letters and numbers are worthless.

Heres a tip. Unbolt your motor and push it into the lake. Its a HUGE hassle trying to fix it and get parts for them since there not made any more. if you got a few extra bucks buy a johnson or something you can still gets parts for.

Re: Chrysler 115hp Year?

twincitiesoutboards.com has all the parts you'd need for that motor.

I picked up a 79 with a scored cylinder for $20. I can get a new sleeve and pistons for it from them without any hassle, other than paying for shipping, or driving down to Shakopee, MN and picking the parts up.

( I wouldn't suggest the drive from NJ though 8) )

Alan. This is a forum to help people fix their outboards. If you have helpful information on the repair of these motors feel free to post them. If not go play in dockside chat. There are still a lot of chryslers out there running and a motor that is built to run for 40 years is worth something. So as the british would say Bugger Off.

Re: Chrysler 115hp Year?

Sorry there commander, just im tryen to warn people Chryslers are not very good motors. I had a 45 Chrysler and it had no spark i ended up putting $750 to fix it. And it still was a 30 year old motor and was slow. I ended up selling it for $250 (thank god) and bought a Yamaha VMAX 225. Its accutly faster than my Johnson Gt 3.6 (300 hp) Ill never ever ever buy a chrysler boat motor again.

Re: Chrysler 115hp Year?

I have a '78 Chrysler 140 Stinger on a 17' Mark Twain that has performed excellent the past 25+ years only doing general maintanence. Very simple motor to work on and as far as speed it will push my boat a little over 50 mph and it starts everytime. I have had to rebuild the boat once but have not done anything major to the motor.d:)

Re: Chrysler 115hp Year?

Rick, Do not feel bad about your motor. I have had a 55hp Chrysler and 100 hp Chrysler which was basically the same as your 115 and now have a 120 hp Force. They were all good motors when maintained properly. I did have to put a sleeve in my old Chrysler 100 as it scored one when the water pump failed. My fault for not changing impellers. Would I go out looking for a Chrysler or Force now?? Probably not. Would I repair my Force 120 if I had problems?? You betcha. As long as it does not cost an arm and a leg to repair you have an okay motor that is fairly simple to work on and maintain. Usually much easier to work on than Mercs and Johnnyrudes of the same size and era. Whatever you decide to do good luck and these guys around here have a ton of info. Happy boating.........Seldon

Re: Chrysler 115hp Year?

I took a coworkers husband fishing Monday. When he saw my boat he laughed. I dont blame him it is not pretty. When you first see a 1967 45 HP chrysler it looks pretty prehistoric. Put the boat in the lake and parked the vehicle. Just touched the key and the motor fired up and purred like a loud kitten. Did a hole shot with both of us in about 4 seconds and in under 20 seconds we were at 29 MPH. Motor ran perfect for the 20 stop and starts we did while we fished. We got our limits on Crappie and Bluegills in five hours and went home. He is a believer that the package can not be judged. My ugly outdated chrysler and boat can do just about anything a new boat can do except mine always starts. I have seen brand new optimax and evinrudes just grinding away at the starters and cant get the thing to start. I work on small engines all the time and I can tell you that this chrysler had some real beauty in the design. They used real metal and quality is much superior to what I see in small engines these days.

Re: Chrysler 115hp Year?

I can say the same for my 89' 125 Force i just bought it from my step dad ive been on the boat many many times hes had it since it was brand new maintained it like you should he has never had to do any major work to the motor you prime it it turns over 3 times fires and purrrrs like a tiger it may not be very pretty but its never left us stranded 10 miles off shore in the gulf of mexico where our favorite fishing spot is, he just went under surgery for cancer and to help pay the bills i bought the boat from him i plan on doing some interior work on it and returning it to him when he gets better its an 89' Bayliner Capri Bowrider with 125 Force im replacing the chewed up prop with a SS 21 pitch prop to get a little more top end. Recovernig all the seats and side and back rests replacing teh carpet and a soft spot in the floor replacing the radio and speakers and adding some new gadgets like water temp guage, volt meter, VHF Radio, fish finder, RPM guage, and maybe a GPS. i think he will be suprised when he gets it back. so i will be using these forums to my advantage so keep a look out for me what im doing is for a good cause o:)

Re: Chrysler 115hp Year?

I want to thank everybody for their input and stories.

Here's my story. My brother-in-law and I went in 50/50 for a boat, motor and trailor. 300 bucks each! The boat is an old (78, I think) 19 foot cuddy cabin. It needs almost everything but the hull. It's primarily a POS. There are no electronics but has lights, steering, bimini top and no holes below the waterline. The motor is shot but we are getting a new powerhead for $1500.00. The trailor runs great! d:).

The boat needs a new floor so over the winter I'll be in my garage cutting out the old floor and most likely the stringers. I'm no stranger to fiberglass work. Years ago (alot) I worked at a boat yard although I never worked on any motors, my job was to repair boat hulls after they crashed while racing, assemble and repair catamarans and build rowboats in the winter months. I never owned a boat myself, just a windsurfer, I was an instructer. I also worked in the auto body industry for 12 years.

I've been away from the water for about 25 years now and I will be using this boat to make my return. I know these are some major repairs to undertake but I'm not put off by it one bit. As a matter of fact I'm looking foward to it. I love to doing restoration work. Ok, this one is more along the lines of a bring-em-back-from the-dead project, but Im gonna have a ball. I think I'll name the boat "Frankenstien".

I've already replaced all of the window glass. They were all cloudy and cracked from UV rays. It didn't cost me a dime since I work for a plastics manufacturer. My garage is very well equipped with all the necessary shop tools as well as a very comlplete set of mechanics and auto body tools. My brother-in-law is a veteran mechanic and I'm highly mechanically inclined.

Like I said in my main post, I will be asking some additional questions in the coming weeks only because I have absolutely no experience with outboard motors. Since I removed the old powerhead, is there any thing I should check/replace while I wait for my new powerhead? Besides the water pump.

AlanR, sorry to hear you got stuck with a lemon, mine doesn't even qualify as a lemon yet!8)
