Thinking of buying a Chrysler 20hp #2033 1969 electric start. Does this have coils, or ignition box? I will check it for spark when I look at it tomorrow. It's missing the tiller gear/shaft assembly on the motor side (half). Any thoughts on the ignition setup? Motor has 130# compression according to owner. He's asking $50 for it. If it has spark, I'll consider it. I want to buy it for my collection, but want to use it. Any good places to get used parts? Thanks for any help, or information. Thanks. ;)

Re: Chrysler 20hp information needed

i have chysler 20hp i bought last week the engine turns slowly hence no spark but when i take the spark plugs out the engine turns fast enough to make a spark i havent figured out the problem so if you have any answers for me i would appreciate it i did get another engine with it for spares so it might be possible for me to get the parts i need from the spare engine .
thank you from

I have to say i am cheating and taking it to a mariner in Ely who said they will look at it as i am busy at work at the moment i will let you know what happens ,
i dont think there is much wrong with it as it sparks when i take the plugs out and turn the rota .

Re: Chrysler 20hp information needed

I am glad to see you guys are talking about the 20hp Chrysler outboards.
I just bought a 1971 203HB. Luckily, it runs great and it pushes my 1963 14' Lonestar Commander with ease. I am looking for a good parts supplier for impellers and such. If you guys come across a good source stick it on here and I will do the same. If I can help either of you with identifying parts I have on mine that you might be missing let me know.

Re: Chrysler 20hp information needed

I took mine to a shop and they told me it was more so a parts engine. Luckily, he had another 20HP Chrysler right there with a control box and everything. He cleaned carbs and sold it to me for a pretty good price.

With me 230lbs, a 7yo and 10yo set of boys, it seems to max out at 9 mph, and never really gets the boat up to a good plane. Oh well, will use it until i can find a bigger one or upgrade to a better boat :)

9 mph what you got it on a barge ??? keep away from dealers these are basic motors which need TLC like you will when you get old ....ask on here dont spend money at the dealer

Re: Chrysler 20hp information needed

Thanks for the advice Fucawi.... Thought I got a pretty good deal on it... $250 for the engine and the Control box with teleflex cables. She runs great and starts on 2nd or third pull from Cold. In my area, its hard to find even 10 HP engines for less than $3-400

But you are right, even on the internet, I've seen accounts where they say these motors are pushing boats pretty fast.

So to "speed it up a little", here are a few facts and/or questions...

1. I have played with the tilt of the motor. This really did not seem to help.
2. Its running on an older 15 ft fiberglass boat and from what I can tell is a "short shaft" (or so the boat mechanic told me)

Got a question... Do you think these "fins" could be bogging it down? I haven't seen very many outboards on my friends boats with this on them (although new to boating)

Re: Chrysler 20hp information needed

a 20hp on an older ( likely heavier ) 15ft FG boat is gonna struggle, specially with three up,
it really needs a bigger motor,
what is the boat rated for?

as for your fins, some call 'em hydrofoils or similar, l can't really say if they are part of your problem but l doubt it
l took ours ( on a 70 though ) off for other reasons
people either love 'em or hate 'em

Fins are just to lift the back of the boat faster when you accelerate onto the plane....so not doing any think in your case.. worth checking the rpm at WOT to see if you have the prop matched to the rig ...rev range is on the plate under the cover...

Re: Chrysler 20hp information needed

THanks so much for answers.

Chrome Dome:
I still have to do the coast guard calcs to see what boat is rated for. Since it is a 1960's one, I had no paperwork nor a hull id and have googled my fingers off on finding some documentation on the brand.

Fucawi:
Any slick place on here that would teach me how to measure RPMs at WOT?
I have the old prop from another 20HP motor and this one, so I will compare today to see if they are different. THey both look to be factory.

You need a rev counter same style as a tiny tach... or lazer tach on the flywheel ...the dia and pitch of the prop is stamped on the boss between the blades .eg 10 x7 10 x 10

Thanks! I've got some work to do. Going to see if a neighbor has a rev counter. Thank you very much for the advice

Re: Chrysler 20hp information needed

engine is up and running it is a bit slow at high revs so i took the guy looking at it the one i had for spare as he thinks the coil has gone so he is going to replace it with one from the spare engine lets hope that sorts it out then i can go off fishing and test it properly.

Re: Chrysler 20hp information needed

Hey, sorry to bring up an old thread but does anybody in this thread have leads to where I could find parts online or know a guy with parts for one of these old 20 horse Chryslers?
