I just aquired what i believe to be a 70's 30 hp chrysler. I however am have a few questions.

I am having trouble locating the serial number on this boat. Any help on where it should be located.

At the back of the motor they have a valve on the top and a hose for the water to come out the top of the motor and out the hose to the back of the engine hood. Is this normal, Can it be fixed to the original way? How so?

The previous owner said that it runs great...that is once you get it started. Where should I start to look for trouble or repairs?

The plastic piece on the outside of the fuel pump needs replaced. The place where you attack the hose broke off.

I will try to include a few pictures if it helps.

That's a 20, 25, 30, 35 Hp series engine. It did not come stock with the "pisser." That was added by a previous owner. You can simply remove the brass threaded fitting and screw in a pipe plug. Don't quote me but I think 1/8 inch NPT.

The black cover is the fuel inlet/screen cover and was used on almost all engines up to 1989. It is very common so should be easy to get at your local Mercury dealer.

Your engine is a magneto ignition engine. If it is hard starting, first clean the plugs, then check spark. It should be a bright blue fat spark that "snaps." A weak yollow spark would indicate worn or mis-adjusted points.

To check or set points, remove the three bolts holding the recoil starter fram and lift off the assembly. Then unscrew the flywheel nut, Wedge a crowbar or tire iron under the rear of the flywheel while tapping the crankshaft end. The flywheel should pop free. Either leave the nut threaded on the shaft or use and aluminum block to cushion the shaft so you don't **** up the threads.

Two sets of points are located under the flywheel. Set them to .020 open at the high point of the cam.

New points cost about 36 bucks for the pair.

Your choke lever and carb linkage appear approximately correct so don't mess with them.

Buy a manual for full instructions. Clymers is good.
