I have an older boat with a Chrysler 360 mated to a Chrysler 300 outdrive. I took the engine out to tear it down and clean it and redo the motor mounts. I don't know much about this outdrive. I'm not able to test it till I do quite a bit of work to the engine and motor mounts. It is supposed to be in excellent shape. One things that worries me is that the prop has resistance when I turn it. On my stringer drive and my friends mercruisers there is no resistance at all, but this one has a hydraulic type resistance to it in both directions. Is this normal?

Re: Chrysler 300 outdrive.

Wow,

Didn't know that Chrysler had a drive..... Is it a DANA maybe?

Sounds like you're in a worse situation than with a Stringer or a Dana etc......

Well, no drive should have resistance like you describe. All the same rules apply with most drives. drain the oil, look for water, metal (saw dust:eek:) etc...... Get your hands on a service manual... http://www.agriconmanuals.com/chrysler-stern-drive-service-manual-p-20905.html (Don't dillydally, they say they have only 1)

Google is your friend here.... http://www.hurrikain.com/Chrysler-300-stern.htm

Good luck!

It's funny that the only place for chrysler/dana parts is in a town of less than 10,000 people! I live less than 5 minutes from the place. That place really does have anything and everything. I've been in there a few times and they have a pretty good stock of parts. You don't need to be a dealer to buy chrysler/dana parts from them. They seem friendly and are very knowledgeable. Give them a call, i'm sure they can help you with whatever you need.

Re: Chrysler 300 outdrive.

It looks like this drive is supposed to have resistance. The service manual I got says it should have up to a 50 in-lbs resistance at the input shaft while in neutral.

Re: Chrysler 300 outdrive.

Yes. That's called bearing "pre-load".

It's done on all rear axle rebuilds when setting up the pinion bearings. (and stern drives )

There are ways to measure pre-load using tools specifically designed for that purpose.

Most service manuals will have the procedure they want you to use to do it.

Google "bearing preload", there's a zillion sites that tell you how to do it.

Cheers,
