Hi.
I was considering buying a used motor to tide me over till I can get my old Mercury running.
I found a great deal on an old Chrysler & was wondering if anyone can tell me about it.

I know the year of the 303HA is a 1971 model, but can anyone tell me more...?
Is it 2 cylinders? Are parts still available for these motors?
This is what the owner told me about the motor.
It does smoke but does not seem to effect the performance. It may just need a tune up I have never tuned it up since I got it. I bought the motor to hold me over until I found the parts I needed for the boats orginal motor (which is a 1956) Now that I have these parts I dont need this one anymore. Like the ad says I have used it for 2 seasons and it did me well.
On the other hand, since I'm here, I'll make a part 2 question about my Mercury.
I've had it at 2 shops (one certified ,other not) both have told me it needs a rotor & cap. The motor has great compression but no spark. But they tell me the parts are not available. I found a guy that would sell me the entire distributor for $35.
Assuming I replace the part & get spark, who knows if I'll have a fuel issue. From there who knows what else could be wrong with it (I'm thinking nothing) But Mr. Distributor said I should change the impeller. (oh & the lower unit is leaking)

So my dilema, buy a known running motor & learn from that, or continue on with the mercury hoping I can get it going by spring....?
I have engine knowledge but never marine.

(in case it matters, the Mercury is a 71 Mercury 500 (50hp). I should would like to see that beast running.)

Thanks for your time.
Brian
aka Skunked

A 30 HP chrysler is not very common. There were a lot of 35HP and I dont know if the parts are interchangable. Another problem is Mercury does not sell parts for a motor that old. I am sure you can find parts for this motor on the internet but because of how rare this particular hp is. Lower unit may just need a seal kit for like 30 bucks. smoking could be a bad exhaust gasket. Concerning your mercury questions you might want to post that in the Mercury forum. You will get a better answer there then the generic answer you will get here in the chrysler forum.

Hi Skunked
It sounds to me like you need to make up your mind as to what you what to do and why. Both the motors you inquire about are thirty some years old. This fact doesn't make either motor bad. The deal is when outboard get this age they all start needing alot of the same type work done to them i.e. leaking seals, etc. If you are so intrested in the Merc then why waste resorces on the Chrysler. If you just want to play with old outboards, and I can understand that, then buy the Chrysler too. My best advice to you is to go to the public library and read up on outboards, repair and maintance. Then purchess repair manuals for the motors you own and study them. A little studing will help you decide better what you really want. If you only want to go fishing, then buy a brand new motor and fish.

According to the Seloc manual. The 30HP was produced between 1973-75 and also between 1979-82. It also looks like they were two completely different engines.
