Hello everyone,

My question is how many quarts of oil should I put in my chrysler 318 engine. I know this might sound a little funny. I converted the engine to marine. The engine came out of a 1985 dodge ram vam. It used to hold 5 quarts. Now I am sure it holds much more. I am using a marine oil pan from an old chrylser 318 marine engine. Pre 1985 for sure, probably from the 70's. I of course changed the oil pick up tube as well.

For those of you wondering why I just do not fill it up untill the dipstick says full... Well The dipstick casing is broken and I am not sure if any of the stick is missing. I am going to have make a new one and mark the stick again. That is why I need to know how much oil to put in the motor. I am guessing 8 quarts but someone at the marina told me they thaught 10 others said 8. Can anyone help me with this?

Also, what should the oil presure read?

Thank you very much,

Paul Herring

Re: Chrysler 318 oil pan

My Chrysler 400's take 7 litres. I think it's the same block. Hope that helps. I think the oil presure is about 60psi.

You Should have done this when the motor was Still on the bench..... You Could have Measured Where the sump oil level has to be to Avoid the Rotating assembley......
The Only real Hint I can give you is,
Your Better off a Little Low, than Too High....
The oil pump Pick-up Has to be Submerged....
But, If the Crankshaft is Spinning in the oil, It'll cause Allot More Problems........

BTW, All engines Should run About 10psi per 1000rpms At Operating Temps.....
