I have recently purchased a 1971 32' Marinette with twin Chrysler 318s (225). The port engine oil looks milky. I obviously suspect it's water. The starboard engine seems fine and shows no signs of water in the oil after being run.

I am new to the 318 and fairly inexperienced with marine engines. Any suggestions on what to look at first? Common problems, any items/gaskets that are easy/cheap and should be done first, before pulling manifolds and heads?

The boat is currently on the hard, I don't want to pay to have it launched and find out that the block needs to be replaced and have to pay to have it pulled.

Thanks for your time and suggestions :)

-Mike Patterson

I am not familiar with Chrysler in marine applications, but....are they closed cooling or raw water systems?
Were they properly winterized?
A cracked block or a cracked manifold/riser would be my first thoughts....
Either way you need to get some fresh clean oil in there......JK

Raw water cooled. I just got the boat so I have no idea if it was properly winterized. The starboard engine seems to have faired okay, whatever that means.

I changed the oil last night and am going to wait to try and track down the problem before I run it again.

-P
