Chrysler 35 Question...

Hi All,

Great Forum, two questions for everyone. Picked up a pretty decent 73 Chrysler tri-hull with a Chrysler 35 on it about 2 years ago. Ran it one season then brought it out two years later (today!!....lol) I put a new battery in and performed a quick tune-up (new plugs, fuel filter, new gas etc...) and fired it up...prrrs like a kitten and sonds great.

First question, not getting any water out the back when running. I did not run long as I don't know if the water pump is shot. I submersed the engine in water up above the intakes ans even tried a motor flush mechanism, still no water out the back.

When I ran it a few years ago, no problems and had water out the back but it was in a very large 55gal trash can more deeply submersed. Is this a bad sign?

Secondly, is the proper mix 50:1 on this one? I can't remember and didn't label the gas can. I'm not going to use the old gas and need to mix more. (I quickly started it on the old gas b4 i shut it down real quick, I cant believe how good it runs after all these years.)

Thanks for looking.

Glad the engine still runs well! Proper gas/oil is 50 to1 or 1 pint per 6 gallons.

Within a few seconds--for sure less than 30, you should see water issuing from the back idle relief pipe. Water pump impellers do take a set and/or get brittle with age. It is worth it to replace the impeller. I know they are available, but I don't know the part number. However, it was the same impeller for the 35,45,and 55 engines. Try here at iboats. If they cannot help, try franz marine at The Chrysler Crew.

Mine has a clear plastic hose from the thermostat to the exhaust port cover. I always check here first to see if the water is getting to the cylinder head. I'm not sure if later model 35's had this hose.

Is that hose near the rear of the motor? If so, mine has turned yellow from aging but it is transparent and about 4-5" long. Does that sound like the hose you're speaking of?

Thanks for the help.

Yep, that's the one. Put in a new piece and then you can view the water flow easier.
