Howdy,

I have a question for anyone familiar with Chrysler 35hp outboards.

I am not convinced that my motor is actually charging my battery.

The manual I have describes a procedure that stated that I need to first see if the motor keeps running after disconnecting one of the battery leads. The next step is to check that their is power (via a test lamp) to the three yellow rectifier outputs.

Well, I ran the motor, and disconnected a battery lead. The motor did not miss a beat, so I guess the alternator is OK.
The next step is to check the Rectifier. The manual shows clearly a back box roughly in the centre of the motor, next to the starter with three leads out the top.
The problem I have is that my motor does not have anything that resembles the pictures in the manual, actually, I can't find the rectifier on this motor at all!

Can some help me with this?
I need to make sure that the motor is charging the battery, can it be possible that this model does not have a rectifier?
Any suggestions on how to check are welcome.
BTW - I don't have the model handy, but am sure that it is an early model.

Thanks in advance,

Zep.

Hi Zep
I have six pages listing Chrysler 35hp models from 1964 to 1984. That is 20 years worth of production with different componants. Now how could anybody help you with out a model number and ser#?

Don't wanna tell you how to suck eggs...
But most manuals state "Never run engine with battery disconected as this will damage the rectifier" So be careful..

Re: Chrysler 35HP - Battery Charging - Rectifier Location

Hi All,

OK, I was at work when I remembered this site, so I did not have the model number handy. (Sorry about that).
The numbers on in the motor are 351HH and 3335.

I had a look around when I bought my boat and did not have any luck. I kind of thought this might make it an early motor.

I hope this helps with my inquiery.

Also.... the manual I have is a Clymer publicationns Chrysler Serevice repair Handbook that came with the motor. It covers 25 to 140 HP from 1966 to 1981, so this added to my assumtion that it might be an early motor.

By the way, the manual does state not to run the motor for extended time or at high RPM with a battery lead disconnected for the test (page 60).

I have seen count less questions asking for the year of the motor (odd that they did not print it on the compliance plate!) and did not want to look too helpless ;)

Thanks for reading, happy to hear any sugestions.

Zep

Hi Zep
Your motor is a 1975 model. I will do some research and get back to you later about the charging system.

Thanks Alcan,

Guessed that it might, but was not sure. All the lists I could find had 351 without a HH suffix, and all the HH models started at 352 prefix.
I did notice that the other HH models seem to be 1975 but thought it might have been something to do with the motor being sold in Australia.

It was odd that the manual differs from what I have, they do go into great length about the difference with 'magnapower' models.

Zep

Re: Chrysler 35HP - Battery Charging - Rectifier Location

Hi Zep
Well I looked in the parts catolog for your model. It shows three differnt ignition systems. Battery/point system, electronic point triggered system with an alternator both would include the use of a rectifier. Then there is the simple magnito/ point ignition system with out a charging system. Since your motor does not have a rectifier I think this is the system you have. I am sorry the book dosen't say wich system belongs with what model. Chrysler had two manufacturing plants one in the U.S. the other in Canada. The first H in your mod# is for Hartford Wisconsin U.S.A. Model# with a B as in BH were made at Barrie, Ontario, Canada. I guess to answer your question, your motor is a remote control, electric start,W/O a charging system. That means you will have to charge the batt at home between uses. This was a very common system with outboards. The only job the battery does is supply power to the starter motor. The juice for ignition comes from the magnito. So what do you do if your out and the batt goes dead? Thats why there is also a starter rope. The reference I used for this info is an OEM parts catolog #OB1989.

If you arent using to much extra stuff off the battery a charge will last a long time.
Of course it is good to charge between uses
but not the end of the world if you forget.
And of course a good sound battery is important
as well.

Re: Chrysler 35HP - Battery Charging - Rectifier Location

Hi All,

Thanks vary much for your replies it is much appreciated.
Well, I thought I was going mad, I was looking right at where the rectifier should be and it does not exist. Bit of a bummer not having a charging circuit, I actually was running the motor for extended time to (what I thought) charge the battery, like you would a car in storage!
I have a huge heavy duty battery, 670 cold cranks, which has lasted a whole season.

A question, can the motor be converted, or is it not worth the bother?

A battery charger for this size units is expensive, would like to see if I have options to consider.

Zep
