Recently acquired an Chrysler 45hp 1980- serial number 457H0L.

It's currently not pumping water i'm assuming it's an impeller, great condition engine and runs nicely, also has a steering problem that the engine is very very hard to turn it when the teleflex is not connected, I think the turning pivot could have some corrosion as was used in salt water by previous owner and has also been standing for a few years.

What I require is some information about the steering easiest way to get it free, tryed grease and it comes out pretty quickly doesn't hold in there, tried WD 40 around the joint.

If someone could give me a link or pm me a link for the Manual of the engine I would appreciate this greatly!

Thanks

hope you guys can help me

Look at this post on the 2nd page or at this address below.

1. Re: 70hp force, siezed on king pin
I had the same problem in a much smaller motor. At least in your case you can still move it in my case it was totally seized! Anyways, the only proven method is to keep shooting light grease for now into the zerk fitting until you push all the old grease out while at the same time applying heat with a propane torch. Provide some shielding to components and flammable parts like fuel lines. Since heat goes up, start at the lower end of the kingpin going up. It's hard to do these two things at the same time, so alternate applying heat and shooting grease. When new grease starts to push out stop shooting grease instead continue with the heat while trying to move the unit back and forth until it is really loose. Cool it down and thereafter, shoot grease again this time with the proper grade until all the light grease is push out. Tip, you have a better chance of success by applying large amount of heat instead of slow heat. If you decide to go this way, you cannot stop or quit until it is fully loose. Stopping and going will just make things worse. You have to do it in one session with a generous amount of heat. DO NOT USE A HEAT GUN IT WILL NOT WORK.

Are you checking the water pump/impeller?s water flow with muffs, In lake, river, Deep 55 barrel Etc.. The deep 55 barrel has been my most positive results when I?m not in a lake or river. It is like Deep in the barrel is the best environment/emulation. I have a 1970 35hp Chrysler that could be directly related to many 35?55hp. I have other info on pump or search wickware in advance search at the top. wickware as user name , water pump as key word or post needs.

Re: Chrysler 45HP 1980 Help please

Hello, thank you for your response appreciated, I will try the technique mentioned in the first post, I've been trying to see if the engine was pumping water in a barrel as wasn't sure if muffs would work well with the inlet, so put in a barrel.

So problems i have is water not pumping/coming out the outlet hole and the motor not freely moving left and right.

Thanks for the reply.

Re: Chrysler 45HP 1980 Help please

If it is moving at all, then keep pumping grease into it and heat it mildly with a propane torch.

Being a salt water engine, there is little hope you will free it though: The kingpin is carried in two plastic bushings. The salt gets into the steering yoke and corrodes the aluminum. Corroded aluminum has about ten times the volume of mass aluminum. The pivot yoke corrodes and squeezes the plastic bushings around the kingpin which is also rusted. Net effect: The engine does not steer easily and sometimes seizes tight. Prevention: Frequent preventive maintenance greasing which in this case obviously was not done.

The only sure cure? Disassembling the engine, removing the kingpin and bushings, cleaning them and the pivot yoke, and reassembling with plenty of grease.

Please post a pic of your motor and barrel. I learned 2? higher on jack stands my motor w/n pump as in the past. The relief out the back will only give you a spray of water and exhaust mixed. Adding a Tell Tale will give you solid water out the side easier to see whole operating.

Re: Chrysler 45HP 1980 Help please

An update today, taken the motor of the back of the boat, dropped the lower leg first, looks like a new impeller but the water pump rubber on the tube was all tore, could this have stopped it from pumping water around the motor?.

Also got the power head and mid section of the leg out of the casing so that I can access the steering column pivot, so hopefully tomorrow i shall remove the kingpin and bushings and rebuild the thing hopefully, couldn't do more took a while to strip it all down and eventually got too dark.

Any idea's on the impeller would help me

Thanks

Some pictures of what you are seeing related to tore rubber would help answer your question. I wonder if salt water has done any damage to your water pump. Some general pics of the pump?s condition would be good also.

I personally would like to see pics of your process of removing the King Pin. All of my experience has been in fresh water w/o the salt water issues. Plus, I still pump my grease and even repaired a stripped Zerks added a grease needle holed to force grease in (if I?m not seeing enough grease at joints).
