How reliable is the old points magneto system? I'm thinkin about swapping out ignition system in my '73 55HP to CD. Wow often do the points need adjustment? How many hours do a set of points generally last? The points are a ridiculous price, $75 for 2 sets of points and condensers.

If given the chance how many of you would swap in the CD ignition?

Re: Chrysler 55HP Points

The only negative is that the points/magneto did not have an alternator. As long as the points are gapped correctly they are relatively trouble free. Remember: magneto ignition systems were the first ones. and for the longest time. high performance ignition systems for racing were magneto. The transistor and integrated circuit changed that.

The CD system can be as trouble free, but does have more to break-down. It does, however, have an alternator to charge the battery and it does produce a much hotter spark. It is a bolt on swap but you need all the parts so it can be a bit fussy to do

On the other hand, I took a magneto 55 and cruised it from New York City up the Hudson River to Canada. Four days up, four days back. No problems.
