on these old things, does the temp switch have any effect on the performance of these things or is it just for a gauge or buzzer? the thing is, it sounds like it wants to run great but, chokes out the same time everytime. it goes, pop! goes, pop! goes, pop!. and it wont rev out. its got great compression and i just cleaned out the carbs. but the temp sender got busted off. and the wire goes right into the stator.

Looks like the temp sensor could be shorting out the cd unit. Looks like it is only for a 65 HP. Should be a small box connecting the orange wire and the blue wire on the terminal strip on the motor. If this devise is hooked up I would remove it.

Back fire can be caused by reversing spark plug wires and also a sheared flywheel key.
