I got a 1988 Evinrude 40 in excellent condition, but would like a little more power for skiing/tubing for my light 17´runabout. I just got offered a Chrysler 65 HP 1975 that needs some work, very cheap. Isnt the 65 HP cranckrated ? Will it really give me more power at all, or just more trouble ? It has new ignition. Will it use the same boltholes in transom ?

I know a lot of people think Chrysler stinks, but its a cheap possibility :D

There is a reason the Chrysler is a cheap possibility.Yes the Chrysler would give you more power, if it is a good runner.???
Even if the best Chrysler built parts over there
would be impossible to find, Some are not easy to find here.If it is a 3 or 4 cylinder it probably uses a distributor,Ill bet the cap and rotor are very hard to find and expensive.
Im all for saving it from the junk pile but
dont plan on it for primary power. Unfortunately your 40 is a poor choice for skiing I think I would try to trade up for a more
powerful Name brand motor with as much power as your wallet and boat can stand.Ive skied with a 88 E 50 on 600 pound 18 ft aluminum utility. It could get a 180 lb well trained skier up one one ski but was a real chore and didnt really have enough top speed.Even with only a 100 pounder for spotting.

I think a saw a thread once where JB mentioned he had more performance from an Evinrude 70 HP than a Chrysler 105. If thats true, will the 65 HP overpower my 40 HP Evin at all ?

The 65 is a 3 cyl, 1975 I think.

Boat is 17´ but only weighs 450 lbs + motor, gas, crew and gear.

It was an old Johnny 100 that my Johnny 70 nearly matched in performance.

I would stay away from the Chrysler. It would offer a VERY small improvement in performance.

Good luck. :)
