This is in a 1983 Chrysler 7.5hp, model 72H3F serial 1584.

If I over-prime this motor even the tiniest bit, it floods out and fouls the plugs and I am S.O.L.

Otherwise it starts good, idles good, opens up good, and is an all around good motor.

I rebuilt the carb (Walbro LMB-215) last year and the float had one of those little pigtail springs on it originally. I took it off and disposed of it with the rest of the parts I replaced. The carb kit came in, and I went to replacing the parts and lost the new spring so I put it back together without it.

My question being, would lack of this spring make it flood bad like that? The primer bulb never really stiffens up, just keeps pumping gas right on through the carb into the cylinder - and if this happens on the water i am screwed.

If not, what causes this??

Like I said, otherwise it runs really good. As long as I dont over do the prime

Yes, that spring counterbalances the float so it could be causing your flooding problem. Not that only some model carbs had the spring so i guess it depends upon the carb and engine. If you can't find one, try franzmarine@aol.com

Just an update. That did it. Installed that spring back on the carb float and it now does not flood. Fixed.

MarkH,
I am having the same problem with my motor. How does the spring go on?

It is better described with a picture, since I do not think I could explain it with words good enough. I found this picture on the internet that describes it best. This isnt your carb, but the spring fits exactly the same.

Getting it on that way is another matter, its sort of trial and error but it will go on there, keep trying.

Just make sure that when you get it on that the spring is helping to push the needle valve closed instead of open. If it is trying to keep the needle valve opened you have it on wrong.
