I need a little tech help, is the 7071 stand for a 1971 model 70 hp?, what would "normal" compression be ?, where is best place to shop for a new starter, the old one is so rusted i don't think it's rebuildable.<br />thanks

The model number places the engine as a mid to late 60's model. There are a couple of people on this forum that appear to have the old Chrysler books that can pin it down exactly for you. Compression was supposed to be 130, but as long as it's even on all three cylinders I would be happy. The original starter was made by Presolite, which disappeared, and then there was a Bosch replacement. I think the best place to start looking for parts would be a Mercury dealer.

The Motor is a 1969. Keep an eye out on Ebay for starters. You can try here as well Starters

Hi Jayhawk<br />Eurolarva is correct your motor is a 1969 model. I can't see your starter, so I really can,t say as to the condition of it. It has been my expirence in the past working with dated starter motors that they look worse than they really are, for the most part. Before you get too hung up looking for a replacement, try disassembling and cleaning up the one you have. You may need a new bearing and maybe a brush or two.

This motors going south quick, now no spark, am looking at CDI unit and is like melted on back bottom corner with a small open crack , does that mean it's shot? or way to test?<br />Sinking quick!<br /><br />thanks to all

To field test the cd:<br /><br />1) Turn the igntion switch to on<br /><br />2) Pull the heavy gauge wire out of the coil and ground it to the CD case.<br /><br />If you hear/see any reaction the CD is working<br /><br />Or<br /><br />You can run it by a dealer and they can test it for you.

Wanto to make clear before I test,you mean the coil wire and ground over to cdi case with key on?<br /><br />Also I was testing for 12 v at my fuse block on engine, I have 12 v at Batt. big red wire but none at the IGN. wire on the block with key on.<br />Should there be?<br />Thanks

I jumped a hot wire over to the blue ignition wire and no spark on coil wire but I noticed any metal piece on the cdi unit has 12 v, mounting bolts, coil bracket ect. does that mean there is a short inside? Also measured olms across coil and it read 1-2, what is normal range, <br />any advice appreciated.<br /><br />kw

compression should be 120 to 140 psi i have a model 7071 that i redid last winter. I bopujght it on ebay with no spark. ended up buying a used cd unit but that was not the problem. problems were dirty points. try this to test the cd unit, with ignition on remove the white wire with black stripe and ground it if you hear a pop then the cd box is probably good. if you hear a pop. then remove and clean and regap points to 0.014 and check for spark at plugs.<br />good luck<br />PS remove the wire white\black on the side of the distributor

I'M NOT GETTING ANY FIRE WHEN TRING TO SHORT ACROSS, MUST BE BAD CDI. <br /><br />? SHOULD I HAVE 12V AT THE BLUE WIRE ON IGNITION SWITCH WHEN IN ON POSITION?<br />THANKS

Yes, but that doesnt always mean bad cd module, could be coil, bad connettions, corroded points, etc. The test I gave you was what Franzmar from the chrysler crew website, told me to do top rest the cd. Type in Chrysler Crew into your search Engine. They have a great website with manuals, parts lists and more. How did you test for fire at plugs when you jumped a hot wire the blue wire.

After I jumped the blue to a hot wire I still had no spark at the plug, or with the cd test like you mentioned doing, I had previously bought a manual which has helped, previously I had mentioned the back of my CDI had smelled burnt hot and a lower back corner had oozed some of the epoxy out, I've been keeping my search out on Ebay hoping to find one reasonable.<br />thanks

Thats a good idea, thats where I got mine, and just about any of them will work, the one i got came from a 105 hp 4 cylinder.<br />Good luck

MOre help please, I've found another CDI and put on, switched out coils also,cleaned up points and dist. cap, still no spark on doing the CDI test like was told here, what is normal olm range on coil? any other Ideas??<br />Thanks

PROBLEM SOLVED, EVEN THOUGH I CLEANED POINTS, TURNED OUT TO BE BAD CDI AND POINTS THAT WERE SO CORRODED OR BURN'T, THEY WASN'T LETTING ANY JUICE THROUGH . RUNNING NOW, THAKS TO ALL.<br />KW

Hello Jayhawk, Glad to see you got it running, you really wont see the spark you will just hear a pop. I thought the same thing you did until i tried it with the distributor cap off, and my fingers close enough to get shocked, then I tunned it over and could the spark.
