Chrysler 70HP regulator/recitfier tests?

I have a 1979 Chrysler 70HP outboard and I have just finished some replacements of the distributor, rotor, CD Unit, pre-amp, solenoid and reg/rec. In a nutshell I had a few probs, but I noticed that the reg/rec that was on the engine was not the same one that was in all the diagrams and being that I have always had probs with the batteries charging while underway (it takes forever to charge even with long periods of being underway). Here is the question:

Where can I find a test list for seeing if the reg/rec is doing the job it is supposed to do? I can do tests while running or not running. I dont have a test tank, only the 'earmuffs' so I cant really do anything more than a quick idle when running. Any links or lists that anyone knows of that I can go thru to see what terminals I should be checking for what voltages or amperages? Thanks.

The best way is to hook a DC volt meter up to your battery and see what the voltage when it is not running and then when it is running. Typically on a motor with no battery charger the battery will drop down to around 12 volts during starting then crawl back up to around 12.6 Volts on a fully charged battery. If the charger is working or the rectifier/ regulator the battery voltage should go up past 13 volts and may even go as high as 17 volts.
