hi everybody .i am having a few probs with an engine that I bought. Not sure how long engine had been sitting before "bought it. Firstly the leaver in the engine that goes to the main metal stripthat moves the chokes on and off seems to get stuck when i push on it. There is a round device where a metal leaver Comes from. When pushed down as much as possible it gets jammed. Is this normal. Secondly when i put engine in gear the boat vibrates Alof more and gear shift seems stiff. I tried taking prop shaft off as wanted to check it but Cant take one of the bolts off. Anybody got any ideas first boat so a bit new to boat engines. thanks everyone

First on the list would be do a compression check. If that looks good then you really need to do some basic stuff usually including, check all wiring, check for spark, clean and rebuild carbs, fuel pump, water pump, new fuel lines and make sure you have a nice clean fuel source using new fuel. Get real familiar with timing, spark and points if you have them. This is maintenance that will help keep you from constantly fighting little issues of unknown origin. Buying a repair manual and doing a lot of reading on here is almost a must!!! Take nothing for granted and usually most problems are something simple like dirty carbs, points, loose wires, faulty ign switch etc.. Also double check all wiring and fuel line routing as you never know what Bubba was doing before you.I'm sort of new to the Chrysler outboard game but trust me I've been in your shoes. Now my 1973 85hp runs very good and I'm also very good at fixing and diagnosing little quirks and still learning. Having this knowledge is great, especially when your sitting on the lake, the motor doesn't want to start and your girlfriend is not looking to happy :).. So you pull the hood, take a little look, check the fuel, etc and say "theres the problem" and off you go.. You da man :).. Good luck.. diggin my Chrysler..

Thanks for the advice. I have downloaded the manual and have read through it. I have looked throughout engine, checked all wiring. Checked gear oil, there was some water in it, i thought there was going to be anyway. took the prop off to look at water cooling propeller and seals. cooler prop was fine, housing was a bit corroded. going to buy new water cooling prop kit in few weeks as well as seals.Messed up a bit as i broke 2 nuts when screwing them back in around water cooler propeller as they were so corroded. got 2 holding it in out of 4 at moment. got 2 get one of those drill bits to get broken part out. Changed the fuel. I took it apart as had another propeller and base unit and was going to put that on. Only thing was the water pump housing was a different shape. having trouble finding that part on internet. i did find one company but they wanted 115 quid. its an expensive hobby, hey. hopefully in a few weeks ill be razzing about in boat.hopefully will be better than last time. got stuck in harbour and it wouldnt go into gear. stupid me had tied gear cable up as it was hanging down stopping it from going intogear

UPDATE.
Took boat out today. Runs perfect. Fast, no engine probs, no stalling. Sometimes in low revs it spluttered (twice in 3 hours) and it only spluttered breifly. Had it on full throttle for quite some time So after all the messing about with carbs i noticed the float needles were a bit dodgy and mucky. I cleaned them up. No white smoke. Eats the fuel though. In say 1 hr of driving it eaten 8 quid of petrol. Expensive hobby hey, lol.

Good to hear you got her running and all is good. After putting many hours recently on my old 85hp I've noticed significant savings in fuel if I run in the cruise range, which is the blue on my throttle control. Wide open throttle she runs about 32 mph via gps. Cruise speed is more like 22 mph. Also, not a good idea to run full throttle for very long, back it of just a little..
