Chrysler 8/15 carb swap

I have an old Chrysler 15hp that runs, but not very well. Missing the starter assembly completely, but starts with a length of rope around the top of the flywheel. Idles OK, but when you wind it up, it has a terrible miss every 5 to 10 seconds. So I don't use it much.

Now a chance has came up on CL to buy an 8-horse. So, I was thinking maybe I can swap out the carb and have a 15 that runs better than what I currently have. Except I understand that just putting a bigger carb on a motor won't help much if the exhaust ports aren't big enough. So the question is: Are the exhaust ports on the 8-horse over-sized? Enough that I will actually benefit from the carb-swap?

NO! The 8 HP may or will actually run like crap with the bigger carb. It just does not have the displacement to draw well through the bigger carb.

Remove the carb on the 15 and clean it, remove the flywheel, and clean and set the points to .020 open. The pull starter from the 8 should swap into the 15. THEN you should have a nice running 15.

I hadn't thought about the draw through the carb. Your advice about the starter makes sense... I thought about that but the mid and lower units on the 8-hp are in much better shape than the 15 and I figured I could save myself some dis-assembly/stripping/painting/re-assembly time if the carb swap thing would have worked.
I think I'll take a run at the CL listing and see if I can get it before someone else does. Then we'll see what we shall see. Thanks Frank.
