Chrysler Control Question?

Ok new to the outboard thing. I have just purchased a 1972 Chrysler 35hp. I am confused by the controls. If I were to put the controls on the starboard side where I sit, either the control cables would be going toward the bow of the boat, or the handle would be facing down. What am I missing?

Also I am putting this on a 1971 14ft Larson Lapline. Any idea what kind of speed I should get?

Thanks in advance.

You should be able to get the handle upright somehow. I'm not a boating master or anything but ill guess 25-28mph.

I have that same control box, I'm not sure if this will work I think I remember the shifter and throttle cables being slightly staggered in the box since the shift cable only moves slightly then stays put as the throttle cable continues forward. I haven't had my box off in several years so I could be mistaken.

Ok Prater now I'm confused. Are you saying that the controls won't work for my boat, or that I have to take the box apart and move cables?

You don't need to take the box apart. Chrysler control boxes were designed to work on either port or starboard side.

Flip the box over and look at the squared control lever with two holes in it. Remove the center screw and flip the lever to the other side. Reattach the cable, using the other clamp groove in the back of the box.

Under the control handle is a set screw. Loosen the screw and pull the handle strtaight off the splined shaft. rotate the handle 180 degrees and put back on the splined shaft. (Apparently you already did unless the box is set for port and you want starboard.)

The Chrysler logo on your particular box will be upside down but that's life.

Yeah, looking at your box it is set for port side operation. When you correct it to Starboard, the Chrysler logo will be upright.

I pick it up next week. When I try to switch it over I might get ahold of ya if I have problems. Thanks again.

Pay attention to the the way it all comes apart. I made the mistake of tearing mine down to paint it and left it off for a few weeks, forgot where everything went.
