Hey guys. Ive had a few tower of power mercs but this is my first chrysler. Its a 68 or 69 55hp. I cleaned it up. All new points and condensers. Impeller looked good. Got it running but still no water circulation. I was going to pull the plug on top to make sure but ran out of time. My question is do i have to let it warm up before circulaion? Can i run it without the lower unit and have the hose hooked to the brass impeller outley tube?

Are you saying no water circulation because no water is coming out with the exhaust? If so, are you running on muffs vs in the water (lake or Etc) or deep as can be in a 55 Gal drum? From my experience muffs did not work well on my 1970 35HP Chrysler that could be the same as your 55. If you have long Lower Unit Leg and only one Carb (they are said to be the same except for the Piston Dia Etc). ?A 55 HP Hood is on this 35 HP?.

Most of all I can be off 2? in dept in the barrel and not get cooling water. I get instant cooling water hot or cold weather which makes it harder to warn-up in cold weather (with me knowing the thermostat is working).

The water is not solid that comes out with the exhaust vs a heavy spray look. If you install a Simple Tell Tale attached, you will see solid water w/o exhaust mixed. Years of info is listed since 1884 if you search wickware in the site.

So i have water thru the system with the hose hooked to the impeller tube. No lower unit. Its kicking like its a bull. Im hoping to have it pumping its own water tomorrow so i can run it and try to figure out the kicking.

The impeller?? Change it.
If it's been in there for a while? it probably isn't any good.
Where the lower unit attaches to the mid section, that's where the pump is and the pump needs to be 2-4" past the pump for it to pickup water.

The "kicking" is probably the carbs air screw setting.
Clean the carb.
Turn the air screw in(gently) till it bottoms out. Remember the turns.
When reinstalling put it back to the original setting.
The top /front of the carb is a screw it needs to be set at 1-2 turns out for initial setting.
Adjust from the initial settin.
Read the first few posts in this forum.
It covers setting up the carb and linkage.

?Its kicking like it?s a bull?. Could running w/o the lower unit?s load or Etc cause the ?Kicking?? I want to say w/o a load in neutral I night have noticed a small ?Kick? idling. I have not been in my barrel in approx 10 years and in a lake in apporx 3 years. Taking a Health Check!

*****I also have the extension giving me a Long L/U with one carb vs you have a short L/U and one Carb. Are we compatible with both not being long legs (as past info)? Hopefully, Nordin and others will jump in with info on this difference.

Runs good after idle. Pumps water. But now my problem is its too short for my boat. I didnt know the water inlet was so high. Any idea whats with the oil?

Will adding the L/U extension, longer water tube and impeller drive extension work? Previous owner might have the parts.

Is the attached Magneto System the same as your? What gap did you set your points at? How long has the motor been sitting? Could it run better with time?

I have never seen that oil or ports (see my attachments. Could that be gas residue from sitting and something not sealing? Is that oil and heat making the L/U black?

Good Luck!

Same mag. .020 gapped. But the screws wouldnt tighten. So probably have moved. I actuallu took it out today and it does work. Pumps water. Idk if on a plane it will still recive water. Ran really good. Popped a bit. I assume i need to play with the card. Unfortunately. The previous owner recived the boat and motor for free and passed along the deal to me.

The 35, 45 and 55Hp from 1967 and up till about 1976 are very very similar to each other.
They are from the same engine family and the differences are, 35Hp did not have the battery and magnapower ignition.
The 35Hp did not have an alternator (battery and magnapower ignition) and the bore was smaller.
Almost everything else was identical except for the props. But the gearhouse was the same.

The oil is unburned fuel mix (residue from idle). Twostroker do not burn all fuelmix especally at idle.
The holes are for draining the leg from water.

As your boat has a long transom and the engine has short leg this will not be a good combination.
At higher rpms and trying go to plane it will cavtate. The engine will rev up and boat slow down and start "kicking" because of cavitation.
You have to go for a long leg engine.
You can convert your with an extention for the midleg, long driveshaft, extention tube for the cooling and an long leg gearshift rod.

No that was not what I mean.
It is a 55Hp if the idtag say so. The 45 and 55Hp had three different ignition system. Battery, Magnapower (from 1969 and up at the 55Hp) and magneto.
The engines with battery and Magnapower system had alternator but not the engines with magneto.

AH! Gotcha. Yeah, really weird they don't have an alternator.. I guess i'll post it on the local face book pages to see if i can trade it for something with a long shaft. Im going to play with the carb to try and get the idle kick to go away. Other than that it runs amazing. I didn't plan on driving the boat yesterday, just floating, but the water was above the water intake and the thing fired right off so away i went..

Welp. I bought another chrysler. 45hp. 1984. Gotta sell the 55 but itll be worth it. Got it cheap because no spark. Reset points and bam. Running. It runs a bit roughy but i think it just needs to be ran. Got to check lower unit oil then try er out. My only question is. This one has an generator. Yay!! The purple wire goes to the keyswitch. But no place to hook it up. How does that work?
