Am considering purchasing an '83 chrysler 85 hp OB. Have been told by a couple of people to stay away from the chryslers. I previously had a 35 hp chry. that ran flawlessly. What can I expect from this 85 hp? Considering it has been well taken care of. Thanks. New to this forum. Any opinions or facts will be appreciated.

Really depends on price...$750 to a grand tops. You get a couple years and you win! Buy only if it runs well now.

I owned an '86 85 horse Force. It was a great <br /> motor (sold last year) and probably still is. <br /> It's simple to work on and was very powerful. <br /> The reason Force is gone is they were bought <br /> by Mercury. Parts are still available. I say <br /> go for it.

As Robby stated,it really depends on price and of course condition of the motor.I would take the 750-$1000 that Robby said you should pay and cut that in half. There are many motors with good reputations that you can buy in a $750-1000 range.I would only buy it cheap!! Charlie

Paul, if you've looked in the Chrysler/Force forum you have certainly noticed that there aren't alot of people having problems with Chryslers...and there isn't a shortage of them around...they were state of the art, and prosperous when Chrysler Automotive had to sell in 1984, when they got bailed out of trouble...just some random thoughts :)

Mercury still sells a lot of parts for that motor. Pre 1974 is where finding parts can be a challenge. The chryslers are very easy to work on and you can always find cheap parts on ebay. One problem to consider. These motors will not troll and tend to have idle problems. They also tend to be gas pigs and are not very enviorment friendly. Get a compression test done before you purchase it. Try and get a test drive with it as well. A good half hour at WOT will with a compression test done will tell you if this motor is worth buying. Ignition parts are the hardest to find and if compression numbers are low it is not worth the rebuild.

Many years ago I had a 50 hp Chrysler. I was in a boat sales & service place & struck up a conversation with one of their Chrysler mechanics. He said that "outside of the powerhead it was a pretty good motor." I had no trouble with mine - but didn't keep it long.

Its a value judgement.<br /><br />Before you buy it, call around and ask--<br /><br />How much is a electronic ignition module for this engine?<br /><br />How long will it take to order a 'carb. kit'<br /><br />Can you get fuel pump diaphrams?<br /><br />How much is a FWD gear, or REV gear for the lower unit? How long before it comes in?<br /><br />Here's my $10, give me a water pump impeller.<br /><br /><br />The premis here is:<br /><br />'If it breaks, can I fix it"?<br /><br />If not---<br /><br />Is it cheap enough that I can run it till it pukes, then sell it for scrap---after getting towed in, and still come out about even, when I (hopefully)sell the #%^#&#%NM&*$@#&(_!# SOB for scrap, <br /><br />and maybe get enough money to make a down payment on on a engine I trust enough to hang on my boat, and take my kids out over the horizon with?<br /><br /><br />It happened to me:<br /><br />I paid $100 for a Chry. 70hp.----<br /><br />in perfect shape--- that someone had run for about 10 minutes without 2stroke oil,,,, but long enough for it to seize.<br /><br />Blah, blah,,,,, to make a long story short:<br /><br />I got it, had it bored, put in new pistons, etc. etc., for about $1,000.<br /><br />Hung it on the back of the 'ole Lone Star,,,,,<br /><br />Then:<br />I hacked around long enough with the wiring and such, until I ZAPPED!!! the trigger coils & electronic ignition circuts.<br /><br />When the smoke came out from under the flywheel,,<br /><br />I knew I was worse off than a Marine PFC coming off Liberty in South Viet Nam holding a M-16, and being 10,000 miles from the nearest shot of Pennicilin. <br /><br />I later found out that the machinests could make one available piston fit any bore. They could make any bearing fit anything else.<br /><br />But-- <br />if you needed accesories, or ignition parts???<br /><br />All of a sudden that engine turned into the perverbial $50 Army Jeep.<br /><br />You've heard about how easy it is to get one since you were a kid----- but somehow or another, you just can't quite get your hands on it.<br />that's how Chry. engine parts are.<br /><br /><br /> <br />I finally gave that boat, trailer, Chry. engine away to a guy who sold if for $ 20 in scrap. Then his kid dragged the boat & trailer over to another college 'frat' house. <br /><br />They tied the boat onto a tree in the evil/other frat guy's yard,,,, dragged the trailer out from under it... and then made the trailer dissappear after 8 or 9 of them stopped on a bridge, and heaved it over into the ocean.

I'd say $300.<br /><br />Lower units are weak.<br />CDI is expensive if bought new/rebuilt.<br /><br />Also rated at powerhead instead of prop like most others.

Re: Chrysler OB. No good????

Not to take business away from iBoats but most parts for Foce and Chrysler are avaible here<br /> Dollarhas the engine parts you called for.<br /><br />My opinion is if you take care of it it will last. People like to bash Force but they either never had 1 or ran it without 2 stroke oil. Any motor without oil is going to freeze eventually.<br />A lot of them were sold and about 50% died real quick deaths due to people who had no clue and a dealer who could have cared less. The rest we buy now and use for a long time and parts are still avaible. I can run down to NAPA and get a carb kit and a fuel pump tomorrow if I need to. A water pump and new housing will take a week.<br />I know I have them :) <br />Not installed due to the Rot in my Bayliner. Great hull bad or cheap parts. :)
