Chrysler Reputation??

Hello,
I've been shopping around for a 50hp outboard, mostly looking for Evinrude or Johnson for under $1,000, but came across a 55hp Chrysler on craigslist for $950. The add says the ignition has been "gone through", not sure what that means. The lower unit has been re-sealed and a new impeller has been installed. It includes controls and wiring harness. The year of the motor is not mentioned.

Question is, is that a motor worth considering? I generally hear dubious comments about Chryslers but have no personal experience with them. Are parts and mechanics that can work on them still around?

Thanks for the advice,
mick

Re: Chrysler Reputation??

950 is a lot of money for any year Chrysler 55 unless it had power tilt and trim. AND not knowing the year, it could be one of those 55s that came with Magna-Power II ignition which were so trouble prone that Chrysler offered a retro-fit ignition under warranty.

If it turns out to be one of those, It could run forever but more than likely it will give you problems and no repair parts are available for that ignition.

While the 2 cylinder big bore 55 was a great engine, If it had Prestolite ignition it was ok but still had weak gears in the one piece lower unit. Because of the ignition and a couple of other reasons, I advise you to walk away from that particular engine unless it will not be your primary engine.
