Chrysler Starter question,

G'day again,

when turning over my son's 120 hp 1976 motor the other day the bendix gear did not disengage but stayed up on the flywheel, l had the cowl off so saw it straight away ( motor is on a stand ) and turned it off

l assumed the shaft and gear just needed a bit of a clean up and a shot or two of WD40 but that didn't work, l gave it a couple of light taps with a rubber mallet and it dropped down again ok but is still staying up today even with grease

while turning the shaft by hand l realised that there was a fair bit of sideways play in the shaft, which none of the other brand outboards have, l had not noticed it before but then l hadn't had to touch the starter on this before either

so, finally, that is the question, how much play is normal/acceptable/ or is that normal for a chrysler
or " renovate or detonate?"
rebuild or replace

Take it apart and rebuild it or keep it for parts.If the side to side is bad get a new one.J

The shaft should not wiggle much at all. The top bushing is worn out. It is a standard sintered copper bushing and probably can be found at any supply store. Press out the old bushing and press in a new one. They usually come pre-lubricated but soak it with oil before installing the shaft. I like lower unit oil because that bushing gets a lot of side thrust load.

my first thought was to ditch it but thought l'd ask here first just in case it was a relatively easy fix,

NO NO GREASE that makes it stick !!! oiled like a rifle barrel and all you yanks know about that ...wd 40 parafin not petrol ...if its rusty that also can make it stick ...there is no return spring its an Inertia drive ..spring at top is a rattle spring to stop it meshing when the motor runs and vibrates ......
