I have a '59 Chrysler 35 hp and I am going to swap it out with a 40 Mercury '73 '74 area. The new motor has the full console and all wires and links still connected. Will this be an easy change over? The Mercury needs a power pack and ingtion swicth for a new key. Is this something me and another person can do or will the boat need to be put in the shop for it? This will be going on a 1959 Tide Craft tri hull.
Thanks for your help in advanced.

If it's a 59, it's a West Bend. Chrysler didn't come into the picture til 64. Nothing Chrysler will be compatible with anything Merc. Trihulls were mostly a 70s thing, but OMC made them back in the 60s.

You can adapt Chrysler cables to work on Mercs with kits. But the big hurdle is that big rubber plug on the side of the Merc. Otherwise wiring can be adapted too, but the color codes are way different.

Be sure to check out ALL the wiring on the merc. They are very prone to rot, and short out when you want it least. Clams canino may be able to help you if you need a wiring harness.
