On my old 70 h.p. engine the orange wire is marked 'heat'. Heat from what? For what? It doesn't make much sense.

it is the head temp sensor. It usually goes to an alarm up under the dash or int he control. It only goes off when the motor hits too high of a temp.

That wire is to connect to a sensor on the head.

When the head overheats, the mercury sensor shorts to ground.

This completes the circuit to the buzzer and it then sounds.

Point of order, MD: the sensor on Chryslers is a bi-metal switch that closes with excess heat and shorts to ground.
