I've got a little chunk out of my midsection at the flange to the lower unit. No leaks or stress cracks resulted. Take a look at the attachment and tell me if I am better off repairing it or finding a replacement midsction. If a repair will work, what will work, JB Weld?

Thanks for any suggestions or experiences you can share.

That won't hurt anything, but how did you break a chunk out at that spot? Usually the break will be in the cavitation plate.

JBweld might work ok but you might want something with a little more body. Something like kneadatite green stuff. Just an example, you can find it anywhere. Stay away from the "mighty putty" crap! (Actually the stuff might work fine, the guy on tv just annoys the hell out of me!) You'll want to grind the edges out a little to get a fresh surface to adhere to. And to get some room to feather it out a bit. I've used that stuff to repair holes in motorcycle engine cases before. It works well. Good luck!

Impressive. I too would like to know how you did that. Unless the look of it bothers you I wouldn't worry about it. That's not (normally - lol) a stress area so JB weld should work fine.

Thanks for the replies. To be honest, I have been away for a lot of the last 3 weeks and I have no idea how it happened. It looks like something heavy just barely caught it, like a re-bar or a cement block. The funny thing is I have nothing like that near the motor  . I am NOT a drinker :D and the motor has not left the house. Weird. At least everything looks true and the damage is away from the stressed areas.

For the time being I want to make sure that all basic maintenance is done. I bought it as a runner but my aim is to improve it. Once all mechanical work is complete I will then turn my attention to the cosmetics. It is at that point that I will either repair that strange little bite out of the midsection (or replace it if that is better). I found a midsection for my motor but if I don?t need it then why bother, right?

Kneadatite - green stuff. Hmmm... I must look around for it.
