I was fishing a creek today and hit a stump or a rockl and knocked a good chunk out of my skeg. Will this hurt the boat the way it is or should i get it fixed.

looks kinda neat. Less surface are in the water means less drag. I am not sure if it will hurt or not though. Still looks like a big log got wedged in there between the prop.

this is like a tail on a plane or bird , you be ok , skeg will stop your left and right motion , so you can go a streight line . check make sure you did not damage the prop area shaft , if shaft is damaged ,you hear noise or wobble, it will cause transmission problem, but you should be ok you lost a small piece , when you make a uturn , you will not turn as fast but this is not a ski boat so no big deal .

Re: Chunk out of my Skeg

Cavitation is a general term used to describe the behavior of voids or bubbles in a liquid. Cavitation is usually divided into two classes of behavior: inertial (or transient) cavitation and non-inertial cavitation. Inertial cavitation is the process where a void or bubble in a liquid rapidly collapses, producing a shock wave. Such cavitation often occurs in pumps, propellers, impellers, and in the vascular tissues of plants. Non-inertial cavitation is the process where a bubble in a fluid is forced to oscillate in size or shape due to some form of energy input, such as an acoustic field. Such cavitation is often employed in ultrasonic cleaning baths and can also be observed in pumps, propellers etc.

they do sell parts to cover the skeg and make it look like a traingle again but i would not worry .cavation is exploding bubles under pressure and they eat the metal away over time.

Re: Chunk out of my Skeg

I have repaired many broken skegs. If done properly repair should look factory. Find a good weldor with Marine and Aluminum experience. He should take the precautions necessary such as disconnecting battery(s) and not over heating the the part. Since these units are cast and tend to have salt an oil impregnation, perosity is to be expected after the skeg is blended with a sander to proper shape and thickness, a little spot putty will take care of it. Finish with OE paint. Beeswax should also be used to lubricate the sanding pad to keep it clean and cool.

I agree with Justintime, that will probably cause cavitation ......
