As they should be! There is no reward in behaving stupidly. Doesnt take a huge amount of courage to stand up and say this aint right, we cant do it this way. It would be a huge political mess if Italy now asks for those agents extradition, and it would seriously hurt the efforts to combat Islamic terrorism if the US doesn't hand them over.
The CIA agents involved are criminals that broke the laws of various countries. The US Justice Dept should quietly extradite those agents involved, and let things run their course in the perspective countries. The US is not making any friends over this. Heres the story:
CIA Agents Indicted Over Kidnap, Torture
An Italian judge has ordered 26 American citizens, most of them CIA agents, to stand trial over the kidnap of an Egyptian cleric in Milan in 2003.
Osama Mustafa Hassan says he was seized by the CIA and flown to Egypt, where he was tortured.
Five Italians were also indicted, including Italy's ex-military intelligence chief, Nicolo Pollari, who was removed from his job following a parliamentary inquiry into the claims.
The case would be the first criminal trial over the secret US practice known as extraordinary rendition, where terror suspects are flown to another country for interrogation.
Most of the US suspects have returned home and the Italian government has yet to decide whether it wishes to request their extradition.
The US has never admitted any role in the affair.
