1985 Force 85 - recovering from melted cdi (replaced) after backward battery lead connection. Got nothing after new cdi, but disconnected kill circuit wires and got an idle for a few seconds. Think the cards need a cleaning.

Otherwise tho, whats the circuit breaker for, why is it tripping, and can it be t-shooted? Could the rectifier be shot after swapped battery lead connection? Seems one lead on it can be bent over and the breaker trips after a few seconds after reset instead of immediately after reset. Sometimes the breaker just clicks a few times before tripping.

Somewhere there is a short and either its positive to negative short or a bad ground somewhere.
Possible the rec. Is not wired properly or shorting out itself.
Check all wires from battery to motor looking for any that may be shorting out to the motor.
Post a pic of the rectifier so we can see how its wired.

Re: Circuit breaker trips immediately after rest

ok, the circuit breaker runs the tilt/trim circuit. The breaker was tripping every time the battery was connected because the rectifier was shorted to ground. (internally, couldn't see it of course.)

T-shooting step was to disconnect the battery and remove the black wire from the rectifier. When battery was reconnected, the breaker no longer tripped.

The rectifier went bad when the battery terminals were connected in reverse (most likely).

New rectifier from Radio Shack - 25Amp, 50 volt full wave bridge rectifier. ~$4.

This issue is resolved.
