So i was running my boat on muffs one last time before winterizing just to heat the oil up, heard a strange noise from front of engine. Noticed a small drip from water circ. pump area, shut off engine and wiggled pulley and its toast. Been boating everyweekend till now and havent noticed any signs of any failure. Can these go that quick or has it been going and i havent noticed somehow. Never any water in bilge, doesnt ever get hot. This is on a 94 merc 350 mag carbed alpha one. How can I tell if its a composite or stamped steel cover? I want to do a t-stat while in there will it say on the stat what deg it is? This is a raw water cooled setup. How common is it for these to go bad like this, boat has 385 hours on it.

Yours lasted longer than the one on my 270 that is a 2001 and had about 250 hours on it when we started hearing a bearing in the pump go out.

A MARINE water pump has a cast brass impeller, a stainless steel housed internal seal and a stainless steel backing plate. Your pump is 18 years old. It's years, not engine hours that will account for a failed pump. And the less hours the quicker they fail.
