Vitamin C is citric acid. CLR or Lime Away may also do what you want.
:)

Do a search for a mailorder spice outlet. They normally carry citric acid by the pound. Oxalic acid is also used as a cleaning agent, recommended for removing stains from the inside of dishwashers, etc.

Vitamin C is NOT citric acid. It's ascorbic acid.

Any acid will dissolve lime.

Lime is Calcium Hydroxide
Citric Acid is Hydrogen Citrate

Put them together you get hydrogen hydroxide (water) and calcium citrate (dissolves in water)

A dilute solution of acetic acid will do the same thing cept you make calcium acetate (dissolves in water). Vinegar is a dilute solution of acetic acid.

CLR or lime away works in this way.

Ken

Oxalic acid does a nice job on iron stains- the main ingredient in any "rust-away" type material. Also does a lovely job of dissolving nuts, bolts, staples, trim, and many other metal items you do not want dissolved! Useful, yes! Just use carefully and for the right reason on the right materials.

Vinegar indeed works, though a gallon or two of citric acid keeps much longer and works a little better, in my opinion. Less stinky as well. IF you can find the right source it can be cheaper because you pay shipping on a powder packet instead of a gallon of liquid. Photo stop bath is glacial acetic acid, the concentrated version of vinegar. You'd have to figure out a dilution if you use it, though. I used a lot of citric, vinegar and oxalic (and worse acids) cleaning the insides of hemodialysis machines. Citric was my preference because it was not nearly as dangerous as some, but worked very well, was cheaper and stored better than vinegar. Use of eye and hand protection is not optional, IMO.

Good info Bearcat! I agree with you about citric acid being the best to work with.

Be careful with oxalic acid as it can be toxic.

Vinegar is 5-10% glacial acetic acid.

Ken

Good link, BoatBuoy!
A pound bag could possibly last you a couple years. Wish I could remember the dilution we used. Maybe 4 oz/gallon of warm water as a starting point? I'll try to see if I can find my old info. This is a pretty safe, mild organic acid. We actually eat it in beverages and food- but please play it safe and wear eye and skin protection anyway. This will be a stronger mix and will be NO FUN if you splash some into your eyes!

Tom, any place that carry professional cleaning supplies or a janitorial service may be able to help you. Maybe even a drug store or hardware.

Even so, compare the price to 5+ gallons of vinegar. The citric still works better, is less stinky, and keeps MUCH longer. Hopefully you'll find a better deal elsewhere. I didn't pay attention to the shipping details- a valid concern. How about a local wholesale food supply outfit? I wonder if Smart&Final or equivalent might carry it?

I used to work for a small water treatment chem mfg. company 25 yrs ago - boiler and chill-water treatments. They bought citric acid in 300 lb drums but would sell 1 lb bags if requested. You might try to find one of them.
