Craigs list outdrive. 1977 stringer

can I test the lower unit by touching wires to a battery? unit is not in a boat.

I know one is forward other reverse unit is ground.

What should I look for or feel? prop drag with wire connected? free spin without?

I know the ohms should be 6 red to wires black to ground unit.

I'm no expert at that lower gearbox, but I think if you energize the shift wires (one at a time) and turn the propeller (respectively) you shouldn't be able to turn the propeller by hand (if the upper and lower units are connected).

You'll also (if you can) want to pressure test and make sure it's water tight for you.

Lastly, double check while you're looking at it - '77 would be the last year they made that drive. It's possible that someone ID'ed wrong and it's a hydro-mechanical shift.
