I am attempting to re-install my Alpha 1 Gen 2 drive unit and had placed it in Forward before disassembly. Now I'm afraid that I may have moved the lever on the lower unit and may have moved the lever and shift cable slide piece. I'm not familiar with these parts very much and saw that the lever sticking out of the lower unit doesn't move much anyways. What direction does it have to be in too match the lever/rod in the bell housing? If I reinstalled all of the cables on the inboard side then there's no way I could have messed the slide position up could I? Sorry if this is confusing. I'm just running out of summer and as a beginner I'm tired of having to redo things over and over.

Yeah Chris knows what he is doing. Turn the lower shift shaft all the way clockwise, and turn the prop counterclockwise until it locks and use a bungee to hold it there. Push the helm control all the way to WOT forward. Take a look at the shift slide (on the end of the cable) and make sure that the roller on the upper shift shaft lever is between the two little arms on the shift slide and you should be good to go. At that point both the bottom of the upper shift shaft and the top of the lower shift shaft will be pointed straight ahead so that they can slide together.
