I removed my lower unit to install prop shaft seals and new impeller. When I pulled the unit down, The "coupling " that fits on drive shaft splines came with it and dislodged when it caught in the housing as I pulled out the drive shaft. The Question is, how to re-install the "coupling" (or bushing) on to drive shaft and (I assume ) back in to the end of the engine crankshaft? Thanks for any advice . Also, I forgot to put in gear before removing the lower unit gearcase. How will I get everything to line up for the splines?

I've done that same repair and don't think a classic 50 has a driveshaft coupling. Can you post a pic of the " coupling? I have a suspicion that it's not a driveshaft coupling as the driveshaft slides directly into the crankshaft. Also, do an internet search for mercury parts catalog. This will show you all the parts for your engine based on serial number, and you can save the files in PDF format.

Zorak, thanks for your response ,it's helpful. I think you are right, it is not a coupler, it is a seat and seal. Now, I just need to figure out which way they go in, and how to get them back in,, without having to remove the power head. Thanks
