My classic 50 on a 16ft smokercraft magnm seems a little weak. It starts and idles beautifully every time, can troll any speed and it runs and sound very nice.
When powering up, it seems a little weak, not missing or fussing, just not launching us out of the hole, but, after a 10 seconds or so we are up to full speed (Two big guys, a dog, and full bow bait hold, and full tank of fuel . It seemed less than 20mph to me,,no gps yet,,,and I know its actually a 45hp engine as well.

My compression test showed all cylanders to be exactly the same, though, were less than 110 per. I had a snapon compression test one time that measured a good 10 lbs more than my cheapie model, so not sure its that low.

Anyway, wondering if any of you have thoughts on if that level compression makes it weak, yet, still starts and runs excellent, or if I might need something else?

OH, anyone know how to actually drain the livewell on this style? Fill up with pump, doesnt' seem to have a drain plug...

Thanks

Check for strong spark on all 4 leads.---Remove lower unit and check for blockage up in the exhaust tuner.

What is the WOT RPM, MT?

When I first got my rig, it was doing the same. Started great. idled for days, just no oomph.. Turns out the butterflies in the carb weern't opening fully so all she got was about 3/4 power.

I had sticky linkage due to old grease, If you are having the same type of prob, something to check. Make sure the carbs are opening completely.

Sorry - No help on the livewell.

Try pumping the ball while taking off, if it speeds up then fuel pump(s) could be weak.

Thanks all, I'll try these suggestions soon as can and see if any fit.....not sure WOT rpm as I don't have a tach on this one....I'm also 1500 feet elevation higher than where was previously operated, not sure if that might contribute some.

You might loose some low end at that altitude, I have had to really tune my motors including main jets to get maximum performance out of them. I have a motor right now that I am waiting for jets for., You might call Mercury Marine and see what their recommended jets are for different altitudes.

Prop in good shape, get a tach and check for proper rpms . Boat been outside and not covered , could have waterlogged foam making a heavy boat .
My smokercraft didn't have a drain either, if you didn't close the fill tube it would gravity flow back out the pump. That's how mine worked, didn't like not having a bottom drain as there was always a decent amount of water left that was below the fill tube .

Does anyone know how to deal with waterlogged foam inside the boat? Is it restorable or?
Thanks
