Classic Fifty Motor floods out when connected to tank.

Hello.

I have a Mercury Classic fifty motor that is flooding out after running for about 15 seconds. Lots of smoke, etc.

While troubleshooting the motor I have found that when you disconnect the fuel line from the motor it runs great until the fuel in the system is burned out. If I connect the line while it is idling it will flood out.

My next step is to just run a new hose from the tank to the motor and see if it does any better. If this does work id assume there is a problem in the line somewhere.

I bought this motor used and therefore don't know what parts should be there that isn't and whatnot so I am wondering if anyone knows if there is a special type of fuel filter or pressure regulator that goes in the line to keep the carbs from flooding out? The fuel filter that was on there was one of those universal glass ones with the mesh filter.

Any other ideas as to what is happening would be greatly appreciated too. Thank you.

One of 3 things is happening,-----Float valve in one carburetor or both is not closing properly.---Fuel pump has a ruptured diaphragm and fuel is going directly into the engine ( by passing the carburetor ) and finally a problem with fuel enricher , if equipped with that.-------I do not think problems is in the hose or fuel tank !

Does the bulb get hard when you prime? I would be looking at the carbs and fuel pump. Fuel pump is an easy place to start

Bulb has a little give when I squeeze it and fuel leaks out of the bottom carb from the hole in the upper-right corner of the choke hole. That must be it. Thanks!

Float or needle valve in the carbs. You might as well do both carbs and be done with it.

I have already replaced the gaskets, floats, needles, springs, and whatnot on both of them about 4 months ago. It ran fine for a while then started having a weak idle and then flooding. I wasn't running ethanol treatment in my fuel (did not know) and never completely drained the old gas from the tank (im an idiot) when I bought it so I am thinking some crap got in it causing havoc. Emptied the tank and started using sta-bil but I guess the damage is already done.

Ethanol didn't cause this in 4 months. What you may have is old fuel lines deteriorating and some crud got into the float needle. And it's still a good idea to check the fuel pump.
