CLE leakage!

Like many others, I want to thank all the knowledgable folks here! This forum is amazing and I can't even imagine how many $$$$ we save by sharing information! This brings me to my question. I've checked my gear oil level and although it trickles out from the site plug I also am getting a leak around the seam between the gearcase and midsection. Yes, it's gear oil and and the engine sits in the sun. Is it likely that oil expansion from the heat and sun could cause it to expand and seep out? Sounds funny to me but I thought I'd ask. My CLE also has these side plates that are held on with 2 screws in the vicinity of the leak. Is there something behind these access plates that could be the culprit?

Yep... the lower seals in water pump base could be leaking and running out thru the inlet covers. Also is there water in the gear oil? Are you sure its not 2 stoke oil from oil tank leaking down the midsection?

Re: CLE leakage!

Hmm...I will check the fuel/oil possibility. The oil tank has been removed and I mix my gas but if fuel can leak down from the carbs thru the engine, it could answer that possibility. I do run the carbs dry before I park my boat however. It sure smells like gear oil. I did replace the impeller only and you think there are seals that could cause it? The motor rests in the vertical position on the trailer and after a few days I see leakage from the seam across the horizontal plate and down the gear case to skeg. I do have to check the gear oil I guess by draining and filling. The sight plug produces dirty but water free oil. Not cloudy or anything.
