cleaning a mike cord

Hi all,
Does anyone have any ideas for cleaning a blackened mike cord? I tried good ol' soap and water, even a green kitchen scourer, but it only removed a bit of the surface material. I know it can come off, as I ran the edge of a box knife blade along the cord and it scraped some of the material off, but I don't really want to sit there for 3 - 4 hours trying to do the whole cord this way. Anyone know of any kind of solvent than can do the job without eating the cord away?

Also, can anyone point me towards a decent source for aftermarket or used parts for Sea Ray's? We just bought a 1995 230 Sundancer in nice shape overall, but with a few minor cosmetic issues, one of which is a port-window that is cracked and in need of replacement. I'll go direct to Sea Ray if I have to, but I wanted to see if there are alternatives available.

Thanks in advance

Take a zip lock bag aand some paper towels. Soak the paper towels in 409 or fantastic and place in the bag along with the cord (keep the cord ends out of the bag) and let it soak .... maybe a few hours. A few rubber bands will hold it.

That should get the crud off.

Try some black streak remover made for boats. If it doesn't work then give the project to your kids and withhold their allowance until it's spotless.

Q-tips and Brasso (or any silver/chrome polish). And when you're done getting it clean, use some automotive silicone dielectric grease, available at your local NAPA/Carquest/etc... store, on the pins. Or...just use a dab of petroleum jelly. that'll keep em from corroding for a while.

While you're down at the auto parts store, grab a can of electronics cleaner spray and give the female connector on the radio a couple good blasts to clean the crud from that connector too.

Okay, thanks for that advice. I'll give the brasso a try for now, as I'm assuming from the other posts that I'm supposed to disconnect the cord from both the radio and the mike to accomplish the task, right? Not being a technical whiz I'm not sure how to do this, though I'm guessing that it won't be much trouble from the mike end at least.

Thanks
