Just got done running and rebaiting a few lobster pots with my bud, running up the bay to do some fishing. Boat is up and planing, give my bud the helm, and I go back to pull the plug and drain some of the water that accumulated from the pot lines.
Plug out...water draining...great. Hole gets clogged with starfish and seaweed, so I reach down into the bilge pocket, grab a chunk of the crap, and hurl it over the side.....along with the plug that was in my hand.
Uh-oh....Jim to Jack...don't slow down! Keep it on a plane and head back home!
What to do in the no wake zone?
Well, I held my thumb in the hole...the whole darn time...until boat was on trailer. No fish, no plug, no problem. Just a shortened day. I'm carrying a spare from now on.

This might be one of those stories that doesn't seem funny for at least a couple of years.

But, if it happens again, you might have to take precautionary measures in other areas too.
Like putting a string through your jacket sleeves so you don't throw away your gloves in a similar manner.

That's what happened to my Dad. He sank two boats in about 3 weeks by leaving them in the marina with known leaks, then turning off the 'Perko' battery switchs that let the bilge pumps have power.

On the next trip to the lake, his buds threatened to tie his truck to a tree so he wouldn't sink it too.

I'm glad I have 2 plugs in my boat, and that is only cause I found a spare.
That would really suck if you ran out of gas eh? or had to add gas while driving.
I've had to do that in a bad storm while I was by myself.
I had to get a bungie cord and tie it to the steering wheel while under throttle with 3ft chop and 20-30mph winds. Oh, and it was raining, in December, in Canada.
I had to add gas cause I ran out. What an experience I tell ya.

On the lighter side, at least you never sunk your boat.

I never take the plug out because the boat spends all it's time on the sling or being used but all these stories make me think i should keep a spare in the boat "just in case".

before I took my last boat out after purchase...

Went to repair guy and asked for 3 of each of the following:

Plug (threaded type on this boat)
Nut and Cotter Key for prop.

This way, if I had to change a prop on thw water, I could drop the nut SERVERAL times before being stranded...

BUT... first trip out, started to 2nd guess myself with all the extra plugs, so when you have spares, they need to be PUT AWAY, so if there is a plug in that cup holder, your KNOW you forgot it

Good advice ndemge, I hadn't thought about the nut or cotter key either.

OMG I thought for sure you were going to say that you dropped your spare prop overboard...
