Cleaning Carpet of Catfish Slime

I'm getting ready to purchase a 1998 Lund 17' Adventure from my Brother in Law. Overall it's a very nice boat but he's used it to fish for catfish mostly and the carpet from front to back is badly stained with catfish and shad slime. Is there any way to clean the carpet, I know I won't get it back to almost new look, but it would be nice to have it look a bit cleaner. Thanks in advance for your wisdom and advice.

The Admiral caught a cat fish once and put it in the boat.
I had a heck of a time getting the stain off fiberglass.
I would say replace the carpet.

I'd say remove the carpet and don't replace it. Carpet does not belong on boats.

I agree, I don't even like it in the house! Nothing but Tile and Wood in my house, and fiberglass floor in the boat.

Try regular carpet shampoo, using it more than once if necessary. You should be able to at least knock out the smell.

I had to remove the carpeting from my boat to re-do the cockpit sole, and I'm not going back. Non-skid marine paint for me.

Dawn dish washing detergent, a stiff bristle brush, and a pressure washer with a medium tip.

(notice the catfish in my avatar?)

carpet in alluminum fishing boats is used to deaded sound while fishing. they don't just put it in there to make it pretty.

I thought that was the second benefit of floatation foam?

Boat makers put carpet in boats because it's what the buyer/consumers want.

I ripped all that nasty ol' carpet out of my tinny and replaced it with vinyl... couldn't be happier. Fish slime washes off super easy and dried fish blood doesn't even stain it!

I like the idea of replacing the carpet with sheet vinyl, that is what my late Brother did on his pontoon boat after he replaced the deck.

his 1998 lund only has poured in foam on the the outside of the outer stringers on either side. Making the center section an amplifier to sound. Even if he has a belly tank in there.

well since i catch hundreds of them a year its not real hard. if its dry run a shop vac nossle over it. its flakes apart and sucks up pretty easy. after you get it the best ya can with that take it to a car wash and pull plug. wash to rear. works fine. done it for years. but the vac usually gets most of it. the slime really doesnt smell. its the dang shad i use for bait that reaks.

now that i have mine restored this spring with new outdoor carpet i use 3'x4' utility rubber backed mats to keep fish on. then its still nice and comfy for crusing.

I cut a piece of marine carpet left over from my neighbor's pontoon restore to lay over my original carpet. After a successful trip i just pull it out and lay it on the driveway and hose it off.

In my old 15' bass boat I always laid down some old big bath towels on the floor, that caught 90% of the slime. I'm going to get the Lund in the driveway and try spraying the carpet with cleaner and then try the pressure washer. Maybe next winter I'll pull out the carpet and replace it with something else.
