$135.00 cap is what I'm being told if I can even find a supplier, I've scratched off the carbon each year for several years now I'm to the point now of needing to file the surface flat again, wondering how much is too much material to remove? probably about a .010 would clean it up.

You just will not know till you try it. Back in the old days we used to clean them up all the time unless they were cracked.
Good Luck and let us all know how it goes.

If you are able to clean them up again, make sure they are as smooth as possible. File scratches are first spots to burn.

Dab some electrolytic grease on each contact. this reduces burns/carbon build up/shorting(moisture)
